Pros: Great knobs, buttons, large LCD display rugged construction
Cons: Poor acoustic synth patches. For people that like non acoustic patches, this is good.
This oversized rackmount module has pretty unimpressive samples of acoustic intruments except for one of the muted trumpets and trombone, and harmonica. However, you cannot use the excellent Akai EWI-3020 wind controller without this box or the analog version of this unit, because the EWI-3020, unlike Yamaha WX7/WX5 wind controllers (which have Midi outputs) does not have Midi output. Plugging the EWI-3020 wind controller into this EWI-3030m box gets you power, very convenient controls, and MIDI output. The EWI uses analog control voltages for producing smooth stream of MIDI notes -hence the need for this large box. I can't emphasize how much easier it is to configure & setup the EWI wind controller with the knobs and LCD screen of this unit than the Yamaha wind controllers which sport DIP switches & tiny adj. pots on the wind controller units themselves w no way to view settings as conveniently as on an LCD screen.
I end up using none of the synth patches in this module but simply use it to get MIDI output to another synth w better acoustic patches.
