Pros: relieved my allergy symptoms, costs less than claritin
Cons: contains less loratadine than claritin
The Bottom Line: If your allergies respond to a lower dose of loratadine than what's in Claritin, you might be able to save money and relieve those symptoms by taking Alavert instead.

| AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Alavert Allergy & Sinus D 12 Hour Extended Release... |
It happened that last weekend my allergies kicked into high gear. I went through the drawers in my bathroom and the medicine cabinet looking for Claritin Allergy 24-Hour Redi-Tabs but it was nowhere to be found. With rural living, the nearest drugstore was a bit of a hike and I didn’t feel like trying it with a sinus headache. In addition, I had the usual clear runny nose, itchy watery eyes and sneezing which usually accompanies allergy flare-ups I get. What I did find in my husband’s medicine cabinet was Alavert Allergy & Sinus. Since I really didn’t want to take cold medicine - my only other alternative - I decided to give Alavert Allergy & Sinus a try. I was surprised at how well the Alavert Allergy & Sinus worked. My sinuses cleared up and my headache was gone without also taking Advil or another pain reliever. I didn’t get the least bit drowsy all day, nor did I get a feeling of being "disconnected" the way I have with other non-drowsy decongestants. The relief from my allergy symptoms lasted all day and I didn’t need another dosage until I woke up the following morning. Even then, my symptoms had decreased enough so that I didn’t feel the need to take any more. The main reason Alavert Allergy & Sinus worked as well as Claritin Allergy 24-Hour Redi-Tabs is that they contain the same main ingredient for combating allergy symptoms, loratadine. However, Alavert Allergy & Sinus contains half the amount of loratadine in each tablet, meaning I would have to take two of them to get the same dosage as what’s contained in Claritin I usually rely on. Alavert Allergy & Sinus also contains 120 mg of pseudoephedrine sulfate which acts as a nasal decongestant. While I would feel comfortable taking two tablets to get the dosage of loratadine up to the level I’ve had in Claritin, I don’t know if that’s also a safe level of pseudoephedrine sulfate. Would it be worth it to purchase Alavert Allergy & Sinus instead of Claritin? 20 tablets of Claritin 24 Hour Allergy from drugstore.com is $18.99. 24 tablets of Alavert Allergy & Sinus from drugstore.com is $14.99. It does cost a lot less, providing I only need the dose of loratadine in one tablet. If I felt the need to take two, it would end up being more expensive. I’ll probably keep both around from now on and try to use Alavert Allergy & Sinus if my allergy symptoms don’t seem quite that bad. It’s definitely more cost-effective than Claritin. However, those times when I need a larger dosage of medication, I would trust Claritin more than taking two tablets of Alavert Allergy & Sinus. Directions: Do not divide, crush, chew or dissolve the tablet. Adults and children 12 years and older take 1 tablet every 12 hours; not more than 2 tablets in 24 hours.
