Dry Eyes? Seasonal Allergies? Oppressive Sand Storms? Get The Cure With Alcon’s Clerz Plus Drops

Written: Jul 18 '03
Pros:Easy to use, instant relief.
Cons:Can be a little messy to use.
The Bottom Line: Don’t endure another minute of dry, scratchy contact lenses, pick up Alcon Clerz Plus Drops and enjoy pain-free blinking!

Almost all the eye care products I use are Bausch & Lomb but a couple months ago I was out with a few friends and started to feel the tell tale signs of ‘dry eye’. This can happen any place and at any time but for me, it’s usually worse in the summer months or when I am in an environment where there’s smoke, dust or pollen. Not wanting to spend the night rubbing my eyes and looking like I was in complete misery, I stopped at a small out of the way 24 hour drug store and started to look for my faithful Bausch & Lomb Lubricating & Rewetting Drops only to find that the shelf was empty. I had to either get a small bottle of the ReNu Multi Purpose Solution and try to give them a quick cleaning or pick another contact lens eye drop. As luck would have it, the Alcon Clerz Plus was on sale and looked to be almost the same as the Bausch & Lomb product I was used to. After using it for a few months I can say that this is a great product that does help to elevate eye dryness as well as helping to reduce redness and irritation. Is it better than Bausch & Lomb Lubricating & Rewetting Drops? I wouldn’t say that either of them have an advantage over the other but the Clerz Plus is less expensive.

Alcon Clerz Plus Lens Drops

Don’t be fooled by the small bottle, I’ve been using this for a little over two months and there’s still about half of a bottle left. I don’t use this every single day but I do use it at least four or five times a week. With the bizarre weather we have in Southern California, one day balmy and breezy and the next a veritable monsoon, my eyes take a real beating. There are some days when I use drops every few hours and wonder why I bothered to put my contacts in to begin with. The past week it’s been particularly hot and humid during the day but the evenings have been dry and I needed to make sure that I had drops with me at all times or deal with the repercussions. This product is safe to use as often as necessary however if you are having any type of eye pain or discomfort that doesn’t clear up shortly after drops are applied or a recurring pain, it’s best to ask your optometrist to check your eyes to see if you have an infection or need to switch your contact lenses to a different brand.

Directions

If you’ve ever applied drops to your eyes then you will know exactly what to do – but for those that have never had to use any type of rewetting drop – here’s the scoop. First off – relax. If you are tense or straining, getting the drops to go in will be a real pain and more than likely you will end up blinking out the drops. It usually helps to turn your eye to the left or right then slightly squeeze the bottle to release a few drops. Blink a few times to ensure that the lens is coated with the solution and wipe away any excess with a clean tissue. Make sure that your hands are clean and never tough the tip of the bottle to anything. If you are wearing any type of eye make up, make sure that you have tissues on hand. Eyeliner is usually one of the major culprits to contact lens irritation and fogginess. If you wear liner on the inside of the lid, using any type of drop will more than likely cause it to run or smudge – so again – tissues are a necessity.

Size

The bottles are small – so small that you can carry it in your pocket and not really know its there. The only size that I have seen sold in stores is the 0.27 ounce size that comes packaged in a box. Both the bottle and box have safety seals on them and you should check both of them prior to using it. You can check with your local vision care center or optometrists office to see if they have any professional samples that you can try out to see if you like the product.

Price

When I purchased this it was on sale for $3.19 with the normal price being $3.99. Some places charge as much as $5.99 a bottle but most places have this for $4.99. That might seem steep for such a small bottle but as I said, the one I purchased a few months ago still has a good bit left. When compared to Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu Lubricating & Rewetting Drops, this is about a dollar less for the same size bottle. I didn’t really notice that much of a difference between both products and neither of them worked better or worse than the other. The bottom line about the price – which ever one is less is the one that I’ll go with. The ingredients might differ slightly but the eye relief is the same.

Things To Know

If you have any type of allergies or have had any reactions to other contact lens products, it’s best to check with your optometrist before you switch brands. I’ve never had any trouble with this but that doesn’t mean that others will have the same luck. If you notice any type of swelling or the pain or discomfort increases after the drop, try to remove your contact lens and flush your eye with a saline solution and seek medical attention. If this happens in the evening you might have to call your local urgent care or emergency room to see if you need to be seen my a physician.

The Bottom Line

If you suffer from dry, irritated eyes or just want to give your eyes a little pampering when wearing contact lenses, check out Alcon Clerz Plus Lens Drops. For the longest time I was a contact lens snob and refused to try anything outside the Bausch & Lomb ReNu family of products but I’m pretty happy with this product so far. I got almost instant relief from ‘dry eye’ and irritation for about two hour before I need to apply a few more drops. The Bausch & Lomb Lubricating & Rewetting Drops did last longer but it also required more drops which, for me, means more mess. If you are interested in this product and your optometrist or vision care center do not have sample available, you can visit Alcon’s official Clerz Plus page to read more about it and request free samples, money saving coupons and tips on how to best use these drops.
