| trthomp's Full Review: Aleve Pain Reliever |
As I wrote in my Ben Gay opinion, I have a sore shoulder. We were in a rear end accident on Friday, April 13, 2001. Not being one to use pain relievers, I didn’t have anything in the house to relieve my pain. The pain wasn't so bad until this past Thursday, 5 days ago. Until then, I just lived with it. Thursday it became a throbbing pain. I couldn’t move my head or arm without a shooting pain in my shoulder and neck. I NEEDED relief!
I sent my husband to the store in search of my relief. I had seen the ads touting ALEVE as being wonderful. I don’t like taking medication, so having to take it once or twice during the day appealed to me. What didn’t appeal to me was the warning about the different allergic reactions a person can have with this product. These reactions include hives, facial swelling, wheezing, and shock. I am “allergic” to both MOTRIN and CODEINE, they both make me loopy! With a little bit of thought though, I decided that the pain was so intense that I NEEDED to chance these in order to get my relief!!
I opened up the box and removed a small odd shaped bottle. The bottle is about 2 1/2 inches tall, by 1 1/2 inches wide. The bottle is flatten out, with the side being tapered at the top. It reminds me of a really small baby powder container. The lid has an odd safety feature, called a “safety SQEASE“, that I had not seen before this bottle. On the side of the bottle at the top are two ridge areas. You are supposed to press in on these areas while turning the top to open. I find this to be too easy to be a safety feature, so I guess it must be for people with arthritis. Once I had the top off, I removed the printed safety seal. I was surprised that there was no cotton stuffed down in the bottle.
The caplets are very small, and a nice shade of blue. They resemble TIC-TACS, but only a little bigger. The word caplet means, “capsule-shaped tablet”. Each caplet contains 220 mg Naproxen Sodium. This pain reliever can also be used as a fever reducer.
I took the ALEVE just before bedtime. Between the ALEVE and the Ben Gay, I slept almost pain free that night. In the morning when I woke up, I felt rested and wonderful. At 29, I actually have pains in the morning! My knees and ankles hurt every morning when I get out of bed for the first time. Well, this morning marked the 4th morning that I have been taking the ALEVE. It is also the 4th morning that those little aches haven’t bothered me!!! I will be talking to my doctor today about the safety of using this medication long term.
Directions for use:
ADULTS: “Take one caplet every 8 to 12 hours while symptoms persist. For the first dose you may take 2 caplets within the first hour. The smallest effective dose should be used.”
Do not take more than:
“2 caplets in any 8 to 12 hour period”
“3 caplets in a 24 hour period”
Over age 65:
“Do not take more than one caplet every 12 hours unless directed by a doctor”
Children under 12 years of age:
“Do not give this product to children under 12 unless directed by a doctor.”
So far, I have had no problems taking Aleve. It brings me the relief I am in need of, with no diverse reactions.
