It’s no fun growing old. No, I’m not ancient, but I am over 50 and while I like to “think” I’m young, many times, my body reminds me that I’m not. Yes, I can function well while coping with the aches and pains from the osteoarthritis that has claimed position in my knees, but there are other pains that are more troublesome.
In 1992, I was in a bad car crash that left the ligaments on my left side weakened. Whenever I try to do any major walking, the pain in my back is unbearable. I seriously thought walking for exercise was a thing of the past.
Several years ago, I fell and fractured my wrist. It never healed properly and the specialist informed me that I’d experience pain for the rest of my life. What he didn’t tell me was that the pain would be so severe, doing something as simple as holding a pen would prove difficult.
In July of this year, I tripped and while I didn’t break or fracture my ankle, the doctor said it would have been better if I did. The sprain is so bad that I’ll be wearing an Ace bandage for at least 6 month. And yes, the pain is often excruciating.
I’m not the kind of person to load my system with a lot of drugs to relieve pain. I don’t like that “fuzzy head” feeling you can with most prescriptions. That’s why I opted for an over-the-counter medication. After trying several (that I found didn’t work so great), I tried ALEVE.
The medication is amazing! These little blue football-shaped pills seem to be some sort of wonder drug that knows exactly where the pain is and then attacks and eliminates it. The commercials are right!
Each ALEVE caplet is a 220mg of naproxen sodium. What that means is that you get the pain relief from the naproxen and the continued relief brought about by the sodium. The sodium is a chemical that helps send an even flow of fluid to the affected areas to help keep soreness and stiffness from returning.
According to the directions on the label, an adult (between 12 and 65) need only take 1 – 2 pills every 8 – 12 hours as needed. (Seniors 65+ only 1 pill and children under 12 by physician recommendation only.)
That’s heck of a claim! One to two pills for an 8 – 12 hour period! Well, guess what! The pills work! They’re effective without causing the effect of drowsiness or that “fuzzy-headed” feeling.
Naturally, like every other pain reliever, there are precautions. Those who have experienced any sort of reaction to other pain relievers should not take ALEVE. Those who try it for the first time and experience some sort of reaction should seek medical attention immediately.
Unless recommended by a physician, ALEVE shouldn’t be taken by a pregnant woman.
However, ALEVE is good for so many afflictions. For instance, when the pain in my husband’s neck (NO! NOT ME!! LOL) acts up, the only relief he gets is after taking 2 ALEVE caplets. (He fractured the first cervical vertebra a few years ago.)
My sister, who’s been an RN for 20 years, takes nothing but ALEVE when she gets a headache. She says nothing else works for her.
Most importantly, is my Mom. In 1994, Mom had a mastectomy. Upon her release from the hospital, her surgeon recommended that due to her high blood pressure and diabetes, she take ALEVE rather than a prescription. The surgeon said she felt more comfortable knowing what effects Mom might experience with ALEVE since she was 73 at the time.
I can’t honestly say it kills the pain of a toothache because I haven’t had one a years, BUT I can say it relieves the pain of TMJ!
These little pills are coated to ensure ease with swallowing and they also contain a chemical that aids in the digestion of the medication.
Honestly, what more could you ask for? You can a pill that helps you digest it, lets you swallow it without gagging and the thing actually works to relieve pain!
Hey, I know the Steelers kick footballs to make a point but these little ALEVE FOOTBALL-shaped pills make a point, too, by kicking the heck out of pain! Now, that’s a point to be taken seriously.
