Pros: The staff knows so little about their product you will feel like an expert.
Cons: The computer don't work correctly, the staff is indifferent to your problems, terrible product support.
This company has inspired by far the worst computing experience I have every had. I have been working for in IT for 6 years and have never had more problems with a company. My firm bought 3 area 51 laptops and within one year we had all three fail. One had a video card go out. I opened the case to discover the video card had over heated due to being incorrectly installed. It was assembled in 2 pieces the board and the heat sink. Alienware had failed to properly assemble the 2 pieces so they fell apart. I called alienware to explain that this was a faulty part and was told the computer was outside of the warrantee so I was out of luck. (If this was a freak incident or an one time event I wouldn't have spent the time to write this email, but as you will see later this is common.)
The firm bit the bullet and ordered a new video card. This is when things got interesting. The first video card we got was defective in the exact same way as the card, ie 2 pieces... the parts were not connected! So I called them and they told me they would ship me out another card ASAP. About a week later I got the second card. This one also was in 2 pieces. So I shipped both of them back and asked for a "working" replacement. This resulted in receiving my third video card, which was not only the wrong card but was also broken. So I called back and asked to talk to manager. I told the manager at this point I am a very very un-happy costumer. All I wanted was a working computer. I asked them to eat the cost of shipping the computer and installing the card we spend ~$250.00 on which they couldn't seem to send me. They told me the computer wasn't under warrantee so again I was out of luck. Now I didn't think the request was unreasonable considering, the three laptops we bought cost in the ball park of $12k, (yeah that is the cost of a car). So helping me to get them working when it was fairly obvious they were at fault for not installing the video cards correctly or sending me the correct cards any of the first three times I requested one didn't seem to be to outlandish a request. They said no. So after this I thought that maybe I would be at least send the a working version of the correct card... Well that was too much to expect from this company. They sent me the right card without the mounting screws. This might not be a problem for most video cards but on this particular card the mounting screws hold the video card together. So finally I got back in touch with their tech support an hour trying to get them to understand that when you spend more the $250.00 on a video card you expect it to actually fit in the case and work. They said they would send me a card and I would receive it in the next 2 days. I then received a letter from Alienware's accounts receivable department telling me they were going to charge me for one of the video cards I had been sent. Yeah they were going to charge me for one of the replacement cards I already bought and had sent back to them because it didn't work. So at the end of nearly 3 months of hell with this company I got the replacement video card. About 2 or 3 weeks ago the motherboard on one of the other computers went out. One of the components on the board looks like it exploded. I once again called Alienware to see about getting a replacement board. They told me they could sell me a board for $300 but there would be $250 additional dollars for shipping. After fighting with their tech support crew about the down right silly prices for "shipping". They finally told me that the cost of shipping included 2 hours of labor for the installation of the board. Now if that isn't bad enough. They told me that if I didn't send the computer in then they wouldn't offer the 15-day warrantee that they have on any motherboard purchases. The last issue (yes there is more), the third laptop has begun showing screen abnormalities: flickering, secondary images, flashing. This problem seems to disappear after the machine is running for a while. If for some reason you want to purchase from this company please for your own piece of mind buy the longest most inclusive warrantee available you will need it.
