| tango-tweetie's Full Review: Alimentum |
Formula buying days are over in my house; that is unless the good Lord up above has plans that I don't know of. However, I remember well all the joys baby formula brings to a household; the expense, the smell, the joy of picking out a formula that is best for your baby. Oh the good old days.
When my daughter was about 8 weeks old, give or take a few weeks, she went from an easy going baby to a squalling baby that I would have done anything to get her to hush. Every night, like clock work (you could literally set the clock by her), she would begin screaming and scream just about non-stop for about 2-3 hours. The doctors said it was probably colic and just gave a few suggestions on how to make her more comfortable. No, leaving her outside on the doorstep was not an option.
We were told to lay her on top of the dryer with it running, give her a bath, carry her in a sling, swing in a baby swing, warm washcloth on her tummy, Mylicon drops, etc.
Finally one of the doctors recommended switching her formula from Isomil to Alimentum.
Alimentum is an infant formula designed especially for babies who have problems with other formulas. Many doctors recommend Alimentum for babies that seem to be colicky or have excessive crying due to the protein in their formula. Alimentum is a Protein Hydrolysate Formula with Iron. Basically this means that the proteins in the formula have been broken down so they are easier for the baby to digest.
All formula is expensive, and man, it is almost like getting a raise when your baby gets off formula. However, Alimentum is more expensive than the other formulas (about $6 a can), and it only came in "Ready to Feed" when I was purchasing it 5 years ago. If you have ever tasted baby formula you know it isn't the best tasting stuff in the world. Well, Alimentum tastes worse than the soy formula my daughter was on before we switched. It has an unpleasant smell to go along with that taste. As I recall, we had to mix the two formulas together until my daughter got used to the new taste.
All formula stains clothes, but this one seems to be extremely bad. So be sure to have plenty of Dreft and Biz color safe bleach for soaking and washing your baby's clothes.
Did Alimentum work?
Yes, Alimentum did seem to help; that along with all the other little remedies we tried. My daughter still cried at night but it seemed that it wouldn't last for such long durations.
Then I decided, the HECK with the advice my Loving Mother was giving me about not feeding my baby too much or she would EXPLODE, and loose it all. When my daughter began to get fussy I would feed her. Even if she had just had a bottle an hour earlier, I would give her a little more.
Guess What? It seemed to work!
After being on Alimentum for approximately 8-12 weeks we changed back to her old formula, and had no more problems.
My suggestion is that if your baby appears to be colicky:
1.) Talk to your pediatrician.
2.) Try various activities (holding, a warm bath, etc.)
3.) Feed your baby a little more formula, even if she just finished eating, to see if your baby is still hungry. (It worked for me.)
4.) Change your baby's formula to Alimentum (at your pediatrician's advice).
5.) Happy Parenting---babies grow up soooo quickly! Enjoy them while they are small!
***If your baby seems to be colicky Alimentum is worth a try! After all, what have you got to loose other than the endless crying spells, and sleepless nights? You just may get some long needed sleep!***
