| TheBottomLine's Full Review: Alka-Mints |
Recently I was diagnosed with GERD, (gastro-esophageal reflux disease)better known as reflux. I have always had a bad time with heartburn and indigestion. I never thought anything of it though and kept popping the antacids day in and day out. I have tried everything under the sun too! I have tried Tagament, Zantac, Ranitidine, and of course the old faithfuls Tums and Rolaids. None of those really worked 100%, but the Tums actually had the best result.
I am on prescription medication now, but I only take that once a day and sometimes I need a little help in between the doses. While going down the antacid aisle at the grocery store, I came upon the Alka-Mints by the makers of Alka-Seltzer. I read the ingredients and these actually have more calcium carbonate (main ingredient) than Tums. They also have more calcium per serving which is also beneficial since I take calcium supplements anyway. The one thing that really won me over though was the price! I was able to get a bottle of 75 tablets for $1.99 vs. the 72 tablet bottle of Tums for $2.49!!
These come in spearamint and assorted fruit flavors. I chose the assorted fruit flavors which are cherry, tropical, and passion fruit. The taste is the most heavenly thing you could imagine from a chewable tablet. It was very smooth and not chalky like some antacids can be. There was no aftertaste and was overall pleasant. The best part of all was that it worked!!
You can take 2 tablets every 2 hours not to exceed 9 tablets in a 24 hour period. It says to consult a physician if you are on prescription medications. My prescription does not interact with this so it is fine. Each tablet contains 850 mg calcium carbonate of which 340 mg is elemental Calcium. Two tablets will supply you with 68% of the recommended daily value of calcium!
Overall, this antacid has my vote. If you are experiencing severe heartburn that does not respond to this, then seek a professional opinion. You may have GERD. Otherwise, this should do the trick!!!
