363 days, 24 hours and 40 minutes ago I left a job that just about ruined my health for the rest of my life. No I am not talking about a job in an asbestos factory or anything similar to that. I am talking about a job in a Riverboat Casino.
Now you are probably wondering how that could hurt anyone. It sounds exciting and full of surprises. It was and I enjoyed the job itself but I didn’t enjoy the pressures that were placed on me and all the backstabbing and lies that came down from immediate management, not upper management. I understand that that situation has been taken care of as of a few weeks ago.
I had to be at work at 8pm and didn’t get off until….that’s right until. If someone didn’t show up I was automatically told I would take that person’s shift.
My primary job was taking care of tour groups. The first bus full of passengers would roll in around 8:10pm so clocking in at 8:00 left me very little time to get to the other end of the barge and be ready for all the people that were due. There was no time for walking, you would gather your supplies and run in order to be there on time and if the bus happened to arrive ahead of schedule you had to deal with 57 angry people.
On the weekends it was worse. The buses would roll in up to 2am, one after the other and sometimes 3 at a time and you had to be ready to get on, count, get off, run to the next and direct, then run back and have papers signed. You just prayed that you had enough staff to run the computers to take care of the masses of people.
During this time period management would tell you they wouldn’t send relief so you or your staff could take a break or lunch. They just didn’t have enough people. All of us that had to go through this knew that was a total lie.
With all of this going on you would get the worst case of heartburn because the acid in your stomach was just churning out. It had nothing to absorb it. Not even a drink of water.
One day I happened to get my day off and had to go to the store and I came upon Alka-Mints. Tums and Rol-aids were not working to relieve the burning in my stomach so I thought I would give these a try.
The next day when I went back to work I started recognizing that old familiar feeling and popped a couple and was pleasantly surprised. The taste wasn’t bad and nearly as chalking as the others and the spearmint flavor was pretty decent. The best part of the Alka-Mints is it got rid of that nasty burning feeling and gave relief.
From that night on, I placed some in one of those snack size zip lock bags and carried them in the inside pocket of my uniform jacket. I in turned, started introducing them to other members of my team to help them relieve their heartburn. It got to be sort of a joke among us that we called ourselves the Alka-Mints gang.
The Alka-Mints come in a bottle of 75 chewable antacid mints. There is spearmint and fruit to choose from. I chose the spearmint for what reason is beyond me. The cost is $2.64 at Wal Mart and they don’t tastee anything like regular Alka-Seltzer. You just chew these and off you go. You don’t need to dissolve in water. Thank goodness because we sometimes couldn’t get any.
Alka-Mints provide long term relief from indigestion, heartburn and sour stomach. They contain calcium and are sodium free so they say but I found sodium in the inactive ingredients.
Directions For Use
Chew one - two tables every two hours or as directed by your physician. I found that two did the trick for the whole evening. Never take over 9 during a 24-hour period or use the maximum dosage for over a two-week period.
Drug Interaction Precautions
If you are taking prescription drugs be sure to check with your health care professional as antacids can interfere with certain medications.
Active Ingredients
Each chewable tablet contains 850 mg of calcium carbonate (340 mg of which is elemental calcium).
Inactive Ingredients
Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, flavor, hydrolyzed cereal solids, magnesium state, polyethylene glycol, sorbital, sugar (compressible).
The directions, warnings and ingredients were copied off the back of the bottle.
If you or anyone you know is taking any kind of antacid on a regular basis except for being advised by their doctor then you should seek medical help in finding the solution to your problem.
Alka-Mints and any other antacid is just for temporary use and isn’t a cure for something that could be far worse.
With this and all medications, keep out of the reach of children and if you think you have overdosed call poison control or 911.
Thanks for reading.
