The first time was great
My father was raised strict Christian Science; for those of you who don't know, this means that his mother believed that all sicknesses were a product of the mind, and therefore did not use medicine to treat illnesses. At least that's what I've been told. So it's no wonder that throughout my childhood, he was reluctant to give my brother and I medicine for any sickness we might have.
After my parents divorced, the one of the worst things about going to my father's house was the fact that there was little or no medicine in the house, and if we suffered a cold, it was chicken soup, fluids, rest, and suffering.
But one year, it was different.
I had a horrible cold. I was housebound, miserable, and whiny, as children often are when sick. My father went to his medicine cabinet and pulled out a box of Alka Seltzer Cold & Cough Tablets. I had never even heard of Alka Seltzer before (I was raised without a television set), and was fascinated by the fizzing and bubbling as the tablets dissolved in a small glass of water.
I took the medicine, and within half an hour, I felt fine. I was able to go outside and play. I had never taken a medicine that worked so well.
Ah, you think to yourselves. It was probably just the fact that his father gave him medicine at all that made him remember this stuff so fondly. Well, that just ain't true.
Still the best, after years of searching
Years later, Alka Seltzer Cold & Cough still remains my favorite medicine to take when I have a cold. My wife prefers Theraflu, and we both occasionally use Nyquil at night, but when I have a cold, and need to medicate the symptoms fast and effectively, Alka Seltzer is my drug of choice.
Something about the effervescent bubbliness of the solution seems to speed the delivery of the drugs to your body. Typically, within 15 to 20 minutes of taking it, I feel almost as if I didn't have a cold at all. It relieves my cough, my nasal congestion, and my sore throat. It also quells the racking aches that I get when I sneeze, the ones that cling to my bones for long and painful seconds afterwards. It clears my head, and allows me to act in a normal manner, instead of collapsing onto the nearest piece of furniture, coughing and moaning.
I take because I have to be able to function at work. One dose in the morning, and one at lunch is enough to get me through the day even with the worst cold.
I've tried many other types of medicine, but Alka Seltzer is far and away the best for treating a cold. Really, there's nothing like it. Try it the next time you or someone in your family is sick and see the results for yourself.
