Pros:Very nice, Stainless steel, strong, Better grip on meat.
Cons:A bit pricey.
The Bottom Line: This is a great item. I burn myself less, and can control my bird better.
I am not much of a meat eater, but my family wants their bird. During the holidays I like to purchase in quantity. The meats end up being cheaper that way. I have a nice size deep freezer. During Thanksgiving, I might purchase 20 or 30 turkeys. Easter, I like to purchase the hams, usually at a fraction of the cost during any other time of the year. I have purchased other turkey lifters in the past. I normally purchased the types where you cook the turkey right on the lifter, and then lift it out of the pan. I have NEVER liked these. With these type lifters, I end up burning myself because when I lift up, the wire handles are hot, I have to use mitts, and I can't get a good grip. The turkey is usually filled with its own juice. I can't get a good enough grip to drain. The hot juice follows me to the serving tray, and I end up spilling hot juice everywhere. On other occasions, the lifter will stick to the bottom of the pan when I go to lift it. One other lifter I had, ended up falling apart because it was to flimsy. I ended up burning myself. I really dislike them. I wanted a lifter that would also fit any size turkey. Sometimes I will cook just for my family of five, and other times I will cook for eleven or more. I was hoping that with the All-Clad Stainless Turkey Lifters (Set of two), that this would solve the problem.
Description:
This product is about 12" long and aprox 4.5" wide. The All-Clad Stainless Turkey Lifter comes in a set of two. I have baked several turkey, and chickens, and have used these lifters for other than just poultry. They look like something that I would use out in the garden, rather than in the kitchen. The handle is comfortable, and the 4 tines are wide enough to get an even grip. These lifters are made out of durable, heavy stainless steel. This product is a bit pricey at almost $30 a set.
My Experiences
My first experience using these lifters went well. My turkey was about 11 pounds. I lifted my pan out of the oven first. I placed it on top of the stove. I grabbed the lifters, and proceeded to lift the turkey out from each end. I was worried it would be ackward to lift. It worked out just fine. Not only was I able to lift the bird and have a nice solid grip on it, I was also able to tilt the bird and drain it before placing on my tray.
There was one thing I did not like about using these lifters. It is not the products fault, but rather mine. Sometimes my turkeys will want to stick to the bottom of my roasting pan. While the lifters do their job well, sometimes I end up tearing the bottom of the turkey. One thing I did to solve this, was to place a rack under my roasting pan when cooking, or I can use those poultry bags to roast my bird. Then I have no problems at all.
I really liked the durability of these lifters. I also liked the fact that the handles do not get hot to the touch. Also, I like the fact that they are pretty huge. You want something that you can use to control your bird. With 10-15 pounds of hot bird, you don't have much room for accidents.
Clean Up
This product is dishwasher safe. You can hand wash as well. I always wash mine by hand, and then hang it for easy storage. The All-Clad Turkey Lifters shine up, and always look like they are brand new. They will probably outlive me.
Overall
I love them, and would recommend them to anyone who cooks/roasts a lot. I think they would make a nice gift for those who enjoy cooking. I like that I have control with these lifters, and am not restricted to size or poundage when using them.
