shoehorny's Full Review: All Weather Outdoor U.S. Flag, 100% Heavyweight Ny...
A few years ago, I was helping a buddy unpack some shipping crates from a order he received for his new store. He was just starting out in a landscaping supply/tree nursery and he had ordered stuff to re-sell in his shop. A lot of the stuff came from Asia (sigh) and had Chinese writing all over it, so it was difficult determining what was inside without opening the boxes. One of the boxes I opened was filled with American flags. I took them out to count them for his inventory. When he saw the flags, he walked over and snatched one from the box. "Oh good! I wanted to hang one of these up on the flag pole."
He took it out of the plastic wrapper and unfolded it. I noticed the flag somehow did not look quite right. I studied it for a moment and then counted the stars. There were 52 stars on the flag! Also, the top and bottom stripes were white instead of red! Ugh! The flag was mass produced and printed on cheap nylon, so the flag was rather stiff. Needless to say, the flags went right back in the box to be returned for credit.
I recently became a Tiger Cub Scout Co-Den Leader for the pack located in my town. We held our first den meeting the other night. In speaking with the other leader, I realized just before the meeting that we would need a flag for our den meetings. When I bought my home several years ago, my parents bought me a new American flag as a house warming gift (our family is very patriotic). The flag is absolutely beautiful! It is made of a nylon material with each of the stripes sewn together. The field of blue is a separate piece and it has embroidered stars made of white nylon thread. It has a heavy duty seam where the brass outlets are placed (for threading a rope to attach to a pole). It was made to be hung outdoors and it sure is a quality made flag. The flag is made by a company called Advantus right here in the USA (in Florida).
I usually hang the flag on a pole in front of my home on patriotic holidays such as Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterns' Day, Flag Day, etc. However, now that I am a den leader, it will also be used for our den meetings to be saluted by the cub scouts.
Years ago I lived in a college town and I had another flag that I proudly hung in front of my house. Within the first few weeks, someone stole the flag from the flag pole! I was miffed, to say the least. Of all things to steal! I replaced the flag, however this time, I ran a chain through the the pipe used for the flag pole. At the top end, closed to the flag, I put a bolt through the pipe to secure the chain inside the pipe. Then, I put the pipe into the flag holder, and placed a pad lock through the chain and the flag holder. The flag remained in place, although I always had to explain to guests why I had a lock on my flag!
The Advantus flag is a high quality flag that should last me for years to come. My flag measures 3' X 5', although the company sells other flags of various sizes. The Advantus company makes office supplies and crafts supplies, among other products. They have a web site where you can go directly to buy all of their products, including this flag: http://www.advantus.com. The flags are a bit expensive, but worth the extra cost. If you can get this flag for under $30, grab it! I saw a few Epinions partners have it listed for sale at under $28...that is great!
The US flag is a symbol of respect to citizens of the US. There are rules and laws for the proper handling the flag that must be obeyed. There are 50 white stars on the current US flag - one representing each state in the union. The 13 stripes represent each of the original 13 colonies of the US. The current flag was redesigned by Robert Heft in 1958 as a school project!
I highly recommend the Advantus flag to anyone wanting a quality US flag. It looks great when it is flapping in the wind in front of my house! It will look great in front of your home too! Thanks for reading my review and best wishes for a nice day!
