In an ever ending quest to find a dog food that will satisfy the three picky little dogs that I have Alpo Prime Cuts is one in a list of many that I have tried. I have watched so many advertisements of Alpo I thought surely this one will be a winner.
Ingredients
I was really surprised to see that the first ingredient in this canned food was water; followed by Poultry, Lamb, and Meat by products {this seems to be an ingredient that is in many, many, dog foods. The grains are next, look on almost any canned food and you will see them listed. These are always followed by the vitamins and minerals.

Appearance
Upon opening the can I was astounded that it looked like a congealed mess. There was a slight smell of meat and I was sure that the dogs would eat it. I grabbed three small plates and proceeded to portion out the food. There were chunks of beef looking pieces in a brown gravy at the bottom of the can was rice. {Note to myself, next time stir well before serving.} What appeared at the bottom of the can looked more unappetizing then when I started putting it in the plates.
I have to say that it almost looked like congealed grease. I stirred it a little on the plates and then set it before my drooling little companions.
Taste Test
I waited with bated breath as each dog went from plate to plate {you know when you have more then one dog or cat the grass is always greener on the other plate}. They finally settled down to eat with the cats waiting behind them for a chance to get a bite if the dogs left any. I left the room thinking they were happily eating, and when I came back in about five minutes the cats were sniffing and tasting the food. The cats are more discerning then dogs and turned their noses in the air and walked off. I looked at the plates on the floor and maybe a bite had been taken off each plate. The food was there in the plates starring me in the face. I decided to leave the food down for an hour and see if anybody that wasn’t human would go back and eat some more.
The taste test failed I was left to throw away three plates of dog food. It had been turned down by dogs and then cats. No winner here.
Alpo Prime Cuts comes in different sizes and tastes. The one this review is based on is Prime Cuts in gravy with lamb and rice. I purchased the 22oz size at Wal-Mart’s for $.92 cents.

My Thoughts
I will not buy this particular flavor of Alpo Prime Cuts again but will try another in my long and seems to be never ending quest for a dog food they all like. The food is nutritionally complete and a nice balance of protein and carbs, along with the vitamins and minerals that should be in a dog food. It is available at most discount and grocery stores. It is a little more expensive then some other brands but reasonable for most people.
