I don't have a lot of money, but I figured it was about time to upgrade from my old, tinny Koss HD/6's from 1992. My roommate and I researched for a couple of weeks when we had the time, and we finally decided on the ACS-48's. When I hastily removed the packaging and connected them to my relatively old Sound Blaster 32, "Wow" was the first word from my mouth. These are quite impressive for such a reasonable street value of about $120. The sound is rich, with deep bass and crisp mid range and treble - never distorted, even with the volume maxed! (And I would notice - music is becoming my life) The amplification definitely stood the test. We were expecting average power at 40W RMS for the subwoofer unit and 20W for the satellites, but these raw numbers have never seemed more like an underestimate; the speakers actually rival the earth-shaking 100W stereo system across the hall! A big plus was the dual inputs - we solved two problems in one by plugging in my little boom box's headphone jack. Now we not only have nice computer audio, but a rather nice stereo as well. We also tried watching movies by plugging the VCR into the speakers, and were very impressed. It's not exactly surround, but it's got some really nice realism in that respect. Everything sounds crisp and well balanced. For a college dorm with limited space, using them for everything like we do proves them to be remarkably versatile. Listening to almost every kind of music imaginable, its clear strengths in sound quality are noticeable in pop, hard rock, techno/trance, rap (if you like it), and country as well. Classical, however, is slightly unrealistic, though it doesn't sound half bad, either. There's just something missing - I think it must be the balance in that there isn't enough bass. The only real down side to these speakers is that the "digital" volume control doesn't allow you determine how high you've got the output set, as a normal potentiometer (knob) would. And no, there isn't a headphone jack, but I'm not complaining. For this price, it's definitely a good buy.
