| cdwilli1's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 48 2 Speakers |
As a long time computer user, like many of us, I have owned a million different PC loudspeakers. From the really nasty $2 per pair things (can't really call them speakers) that merely make noise so you can tell where they are in the dark, to high-end PC speakers from Harman-Kardon.
Since I do occasionally use my PC for movies and TV I wanted speakers that were OK but not audiophile quality (just a nice way of saying I am cheap). I listened to a few in the store - what a range of choices, and while most of the choices are really bad, some stood out for their sound and were even available at a reasonable price.
The sound card in my PC is a SoundBlaster Live! - really the nicest sound card I have heard - and it deserved a pair of speakers that would at least try to do it justice - which also meant I needed a subwoofer as the satellite speakers are too small to move enough air to produce a good bass response.
After listening and contemplating the cost, I took the Altec-Lansing ACS48's home and plugged them in. The SB Live! puts out a roll of thunder when the machine powers up - IMPRESSIVE - it sounded so real (and I was not expecting it) I looked out of the window to see what was going on. I have scared many a person (and one cat) in the computer room with this combination of speakers, sound card and thunder.
These speakers are good enough to listen to music, be it classical or pop or watch a DVD on without making you wonder why you are doing it in the computer room.
These speakers speak (sorry, I just had to do it) for themselves; they are a very reasonable investment that deliver a very high quality sound. The ACS48's are magnetically shielded so have no adverse affect on the computer monitor image, even when placed tight against the monitor case. The subwoofer will make the floor vibrate and is just the right height to offer a comfortable footrest should you need one, too.
