| merc13's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 48 2 Speakers |
The Altec Lansing ACS48's are easily the most powerful set of speakers I have ever owned. While the drivers themselves are a little puny compared to the roar of the 6" subwoofer in its excellent resonating box, it is great for games on the computer. They are also excellent for playing techno/trance/ambient music. The roar of a rocket flying through the air in Quake 3 is amazing, and the impact is heart stopping. For the $130 I spent a couple years ago on this system, I am still very pleased.
Granted, I also listen to Enya, Caroline's Spine, Frank Zappa, Fiona Apple, and many other bands that require more mid and highs. So they are not the perfect solution to listen to music on your computer. I read other opinions here about the ACS48 and I have noticed that others also blew one of their drivers. This lead me to believe something is awry, but I am in no position to complain too much as it was mostly my fault that my left speaker is mostly dead. One day I had it playing music very loud and someone wanted my attention so instead of navigating to turn the music down I just hit both buttons to turn off the speakers. A horrible gurgling noise came from the speakers and they sputtered out. From then until now my left speaker has had no mid-range at all, only the tweeter issuing sound. The sound is slightly off center, but still works.
In addition, the ACS48 has another input so you can hook up a Discman to your speakers and play directly from a CD player and still have a game CD in, playing a game. This may seem like a small feature, but I have found it handy many times. The subwoofer also has a volume knob to adjust the thump, also very handy.
Finally, I would recommend the ACS48 to hardcore gamers, techno music lovers, or anyone looking for speakers $130 or less. I have heard great things about both the high-end Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500 and Klipsch, but they cost twice as much.
