Pros: Great sound. Good durability. Not very expensive.
Cons: Flimsy cords.
The Bottom Line: Buy this! It's the best under-$100 3 speaker (or any speaker) system you can buy. This IS audiophile performance for a budget price.

WOW!!!
I've had this speaker system for over 4 years and it has surprised me ever since I purchased it in 1997. I was originally looking for a computer speaker system that was "good" but not too expensive. One of my friends had the ACS45's and I had thought they sounded "alright." They were only computer speakers and did not need to sound like audiophile equipment (I thought at the time).
Well, I was interested in what was available from ALTEC LANSING at the time, so I checked out their website and some some computer review magazines. I learned that ALTEC had come out with a satellite system with 80 watts of power (a 40 watt wooden SUB!!) and was very interested. I eventually encountered numerous reviews that praised the new ACS48's, so I purchased the system for just over $100 from an online retailer.
Shi-t. Sorry about the expletive, but this speaker system surprised me. The sub is not that large (only 6 1/2 inches I think) but provides a roomfull of bass (although for medium to smaller rooms). The wooden structure of the sub offers bass without nasty distortion or vibrations of other plastic subs. Very impressive. Since the sub is smaller (although not that small for a computer system), placement is key. I've experienced awesome bass from this sub and almost no bass from this sub simply based on the location of the sub. Play with it -- small rooms will have a "sweet spot." (10 inches from the wall may provide 200% more bass than 6 inches from the wall).
When this system is set up correctly (you'll have to play with speaker setting) you will have sound that you wouldn't expect from a $100 system.
Cons: Some people dislike the volume controls on top of the satellites ( I like it, however). The cloth grilles seem to deteriorate quickly. I handle them a lot, however, and this may be the reason. It's simply cosmetic and does not effect the sound quality. ........Also, the cord connecting the two satellites became loose and did not work correctly. ALTEC LANSING replaced this free of charge and was a pleasure to deal with.
