Pros: affordable, compact and trendy design, subwoofer included, separate controls for sub
Cons: speakers cannot operate alone without a dreadful decrease in sound quality
The Bottom Line: You absolutely cannot get a speaker with better sound, quality, and durability for under $30. I love these speakers, and anticipate using them for years to come.
alisonlk's Full Review: Altec Lansing AVS300 2 Speakers
As soon as I set foot in my college dorm room and started downloading music from the various sources on the 'net (gotta love the network connection speed), I came to the realization that the speakers in my laptop computer just aren't good enough. Don't get me wrong, the sound is good, however, I like a bit of bass. I like to feel my stomach thump with the beat. I like to, well, enjoy my music to the highest degree.
My answer came when I found the Altec Lansing AVS300 3-piece speaker system at my local Sam's Club. I didn't want to spend too much money on speakers, so $29+tax was perfect, AND it included a subwoofer. I just can't live without the sub!
Let me describe these little wonder speakers to you. The two main speakers look fairly small, but their compact design can deceive you. When hooked up to the sub, the quality of the sound coming out of them is amazing! They fit perfectly on my desk, cozied up right next to my laptop. The controls are on the right speaker (as it is on all of the Altecs that I've purchased in the past), and they consist of a power push switch and a separate volume knob. My old Altecs had the power knob built into the volume control, so this is a wonderful improvement.
The subwoofer is the true heart of the system. It connects to the speakers via a rather thick cord, and sends bass into the wall, around the room, and practically thru one's soul! A nice thing about this sub is that it has a control knob on it's side that allows the user to change the bass level that the sub outputs. What a great feature, one that wasn't on my old Altec subwoofer!
Overall, the only complaint I have is that you can't work the two small speakers without the subwoofer plugged in. Well, you really can, but the sound has absolutely no bass, resulting in a wonderful tinny sound. Trust me, without the bass, music you love turns into music you can't stand to listen to. Keep the sub plugged in! I highly recommend that you keep the subwoofer control set around the middle setting (due to the free-flow knob, there are literally infinitely many settings) if not at the highest.
My speakers haven't given me any problems yet, and I don't anticipate them doing so. They came with all of the cords that I needed, and hooked up in under 5 minutes. For under $30, I seriously can't complain about these power packers--they're wonderful!
