super-b's Full Review: Altec Lansing AVS300 2 Speakers
First off, this is my second pair of Altec Lansing speakers, so I had an idea of what to expect when I hooked everything up.
Sub
What really startles me is that the sub for this speaker set is pretty good. It's not plastic (except for the front cosmetic covering), but is instead enclosed in a nice wooden case. It delivers deep rich bass. I only wish that the satellites delivered great sound too.
Satellites
The satellites are pretty wimpy for my taste. They weigh less than a pound each. I wouldn't care about the weight if it wasn't for the power button on the right speaker. If you look at the pic of this product, you'll notice it's a push button. So, when i go to turn the speakers on I have to either: 1)Hold the speaker in place; or 2)Push the speaker back until it hits a heavier object that won't move back and therefore allowing my finger to actually push the button in enough so the speakers turn on.
Besides that design flaw, there are other aspects about this speaker system I don't care for.
The satellites don't deliver very high quality sound. I have onboard AC '97 sound, SBLive 5.1, and Hercules Game Theatre XP. No matter which sound device i use, i'm still left with an empty sound from these satellites. I'm not an audiophile, but I know these satellites are pathetic. I have a tough time hearing words come from the speakers when listening to music (cd, wavs, mp3s, etc.) or when I'm watching a movie.
Conclusion
I know Altec Lansing can make good quality speakers at a reasonable price, I've had a pair. But these speakers aren't that great. If you want something for the sole purpose of hearing the windows/linux wav play when you boot up - then these speakers could be for you. But if you're wanting rich sound with a lot of depth, you should definately look into something else.
