Why I have them
I usually start my reviews with the reason that I have the product in question, and with the AVS 300 it is a funny story. I wanted a new computer, so I built my own to get away from the HP Pavilion I had. I tried to reuse as much as I could, and that turned out to be very little, including the speakers. The HP speakers had no outside amplification and the new motherboard had no interior amplification, so I had to buy some new speakers! I didn't have a lot of dough to spend, what with just putting together a whole new computer. I happened to be walking through Sam's Club and I see this speaker set with two satellites and one sub, priced at $19. It had the Altec Lansing name, so I knew it was not junk, and I figured what the heck?
Setup
I try to explain any difficulties with setup as well, and in the case of these speakers, it is literally 1, 2, 3. \
1) Plug the power supply into the wall outlet and the sub.
2) Plug the satellites into the subwoofer.
3) Plug the cord into the computer in the appropriate spot.
Other than that, you may have to push the button on the sattelite to give power to the speakers, set the volume, and set the bass level on the sub.
Reminder: These are amplified speakers, so you should choose either the computer or the speakers themselves to control the volume. I would recommend turning the volume output on the computer down and controlling via the speakers, as this reduces/minimizes any feedback you may encounter.
Performance
I don't mean to be short, but this can be summed up in very few words: These speakers sound great! They may only have 17 watts of power, but they sound really, really great!
I have several music files on my PC from copying discs and MP3's, and I gotta tell you, they sound almost as good through these speakers as my Bose Acoustic. (For more on that, see my Bose review, http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-5C3-317A5730-39A99A36-prod5) The bass is deep, the treble is clear, and the voices do not get distorted, even at fairly high volumes. This is not going to rock the house during a raging party, but it will more than suffice for your own listening enjoyment!
Summary
I bought these on the premise that they were economical, and that they may be as good as the name suggested. I have been very pleased with them to date, and I believe that you will be too!
