| erickn8318u's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 54 4 Speakers |
I purchased my own computer 1 1/2 years ago, and at that time I didn't know much about 3D sound cards, 3D speakers, or anything. But I slowly became more advanced in computer use and knowledge. I began to realize that the on-board sound card and $12 speakers that my computer came with, were pretty junky... When I would play a music CD loud, the sound was distorted and fuzzy, with no clear treble and NO bass. And in my games such as Flight Simulator, it sounded very unrealistic.
Then I purchased a Creative Sound Blaster PCI512 sound card (might do a seperate review on that). That helped the sound quality, but it was very much lacking because of my default speakers with no 3D surround or bass range. So I began to ask in forums on the internet: "Where can I get a inexpensive speaker set that has a subwoofer and high-quality Surround sound??" And everyone started telling me, "you'll have to pay $100-$300 to get any decent setup!" But then I read a review of the Altec Lansing ACS 54, and was amazed to hear that there was speakers with the features I wanted for a good price!!! I found that the online store: "INPOWR services" had the best deal on the web: $59 with FREE shipping!! (that was 8 months ago--these speakers can now be purchased at certain online stores for $49)
When I opened the retail box, inside were carefully packaged 4 small surround speakers, and one medium-size subwoofer. It came with a getting started guide, but the package does not come with any software or drivers. (none needed)
I simply plugged in the 5 speakers to the 2 jacks on my soundcard, then configured my Creative Labs soundcard software to playback 5 speaker-3d surround sound. Cranking up the volume, I began testing my music and 3d games. I was and STILL AM astounded by the superior quality and great 3d sound that these small speakers put out!!! I can virtually turn the volume all the way up to deafening, without any distortion or crackeling sound! They work great in all games, and with any kind of music. It has a great Bass thump, and contrary to what another Epinions review said, it DOES have a Bass volume control on the speaker, although no treble control. Bass and Treble can also be controlled in the computer software.
The rear speakers have mounting systems if you want to mount them on the wall, and the front speakers have their own stands. There are 2 volume controls, so you can set different volumes for the rear surround speakers. The only thing I don't like about the speakers is that the power-on/off button is in the back of the speaker, not exactly convenient.
The speakers are a much better value than other expensive speaker setups, because they have equal sound for a much lower price! I wouldn't trade these for anything.
