The Bottom Line: Get Munk'd!
My kids are huge fans of The Chipmunks, which makes me happy because as a child I loved them too. Of course, the new Chipmunks have had a CGI and style makeover to bring them up to date. The movie which came out in 2007 has remained a favorite in our house - enjoyed by both kids now age 5 and 9 - especially by my 5 year old. She became smitten with Alvin at the age of 3 and hasn't stopped loving the furry little guy. I had my husband download The Chipmunks soundtrack album after the kids kept watching portions of the movie over and over that included the remake of The Witch Doctor song.
You know... Come on shake, come on roll!.. Everybody hit the floor! Come on shake, come on roll!... the Chipmunks here we go!
The original soundtrack has 16 tracks on it including 2 bonus tracks that are Chipmunk originals from the 1950's - the original Witch Doctor song and the classic Christmas song. The kids think the original Witch Doctor track is hilarious since it is so fast and squeaky. The Christmas song brings me right back to my childhood when I actually owned a '45 record with this tune on it. My kids don't even know what a record is, let alone a cassette tape! I feel like a kid again every time I hear the song. I hope you enjoy Christmas Don't be Late because it is on this album 3 times - the classic version and 2 remade versions. The kids don't seem to care that its not Christmas time and will listen to the song any time of year. I hope that they'll release a modernized Christmas album since I also remember having a Chipmunks Christmas record as a child.
The Chipmunks soundtrack has a mix of modern music from the movie including "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter done Chipmunks style. It is very playable and the kids and I sing along to it. Of course, every time I hear it I think about how they used to play this on American Idol as the contestants were eliminated.
The bulk of the songs on this album have a very Hip Hop/Urban/Rap feel to them and if you have seen The Chipmunks movie, you'll see that they have given Alvin and The Chipmunks an urban look with hoodies and bling. There is some rapping on the album but all the lyrics are kiddified and "clean". My little hip hop dancing "booty shakin'" 5 year old thoroughly thinks she is ALL THAT when she is dancing around to these songs. I admit it that I have cranked a few in the car more than a few times.
A very fun album!
