"Fresh" is the first word that comes to mind for Catamount Amber. This ale has a fresh, slightly fruity bouquet and a light red amber color. It pours up a sweet, frothy cappuccino head with some staying power. It has a medium body that almost gets syrupy. The very light sparkle goes flat soon after pouring, and the beer loses its edge and becomes sweet... too sweet.
Catamount Amber's overall taste is very light and fruity. There's a touch of bitter at the back end, but the base is very sweet. There is no smoky or nutty flavor. The finish is as clean as Rolling Rock (i.e., water). There's no "clacky" aftertaste that you can get with some ales... but there's also nothing to savor at the finish.
This beer's lightness would pair well with some foods, although the sweetness would overpower many. Best pairings would be strong cheeses and meats or very spicy Thai or Indian. It's too sweet for Mexican or pizza.
This is not a rich ale. It's a bit of a lightweight, and the fruity sweetness can get cloying as Kool-Aid after a while. I prefer strong flavors--nutty or bitter or smoky-- or light and pristine like a Rolling Rock or Corona (with lemon!). Catamount Amber straddles too many fences, and comes off in the end like a party punch. But for someone making the shift from dull American lagers into the big bad world of ambers, this might be a good training ale.
