As far as amber ales go, this is easily one of the best I've had. It has a strong fruity hops fragrance that engulfs your nostrils with every sip. The aroma also has hints of spicy malt. It has a striking bright copper color with a short-lived light ochre-colored head. It's medium bodied but more of the heavy end of the spectrum. This is definitely not a light beer but it goes down very smooth.
Presently, my current tastes lean more towards dark, thick beers, especially stout. But I've had my share of ales and Bell's Amber Ale is top shelf. Although this isn't a dark brew, it possesses qualities that I enjoy in a tall, cool mug. This ale is heavier than most ales I've had. Each swallow makes me wonder if this is how diluted honey with an alcohol tinge would taste. The mild sugary flavor is not overwhelming and is perfectly balanced. The sticky sweetness coats your lips after each and every drink. Letting this amber ale warm a bit will bring out even more flavors.
The richness of this amber ale is sublime. There is a very slight bitter aftertaste that follows each swallow. Bell's Amber Ale is such an enjoyable beer that I'm practically sold on returning to the ale family if I can expect more like this one. This reminds me of Irish ale draughts because it is heavier with creamy subtleties. This is the kind of beer that you hope never ends. I drank mine in the absence of food but I imagine this would compliment a good steak dinner or go well with ribs and wings.
Like the other Bell's brews I've had, I picked up this one in a Bell's sampler pack, which is the way to go because they offer an fine selection of high-end brews and that way you can try more than one. And all of their conditioned brews deserve attention. Bell's Amber Ale is brewed by the Kalamazoo Brewing Company and runs about $7.50 for a six-pack found in finer liquor stores. If you like amber ale or honey wheat , then you should find this one extremely satisfying. I consider this one on the higher end of the scale.
