sparklesky's Full Review: Moon Unit Zappa - America the Beautiful
America the Beautiful is Moon Unit Zappa's first novel. She is daughter of the legendary artist/composer/anarchist Frank Zappa.
The novel seems to mirror Moon's own life. The heroine, America Throne, child of brilliant artist Boris struggles to live in her dead father's shadow while dealing with their semi destructive relationship. The father/daughter relationship is a very predominate theme throughout the book. America describes in great detail the disappointments of being Boris' child, example never eating a meal privately because of fan interruptions and her father's womanizing ways.
Another strong character is that of Spoonie,America's talented, much loved younger brother. Sibling rivalry at its best and most intimate. I laughed out loud at a young America's request to put toddler Spoonie up for adoption because he messed with one of her toys only to be meet with a firm scolding for even suggesting such a thing.
America faces the problems of every woman while maintaining her B celebrity status. Unhappy with her non movie star looks, lack of career, strange(that's being kind)boyfriends -the reader is taken on a journey through America's eyes that they themselves could have written. I find this the true beauty of this book.
While Zappa is not yet the most talented of writers and character development is not what it could be,I highly recommend this book. This book is full of humor, any woman will identify with America's plight. Zappa describes some things all woman do but very rarely will talk about or admit to.
