American Girls - Kailey's Boogie Board. Is it worth the $20?

The Bottom Line: This has been a really fun accessory that my daughter enjoys when playing with her American Girl - Kailey.

I’ve noticed that over the course of the past year my nine-year old daughter has lost her love of Barbie. It’s not that she doesn’t still play with the gazillion ones up in her playroom from time to time! It is just that they are not the first doll she chooses from any more. So, who is the new favorite doll in this house? It is none other than Kailey, from American Girl.
Kailey joined our household this past Christmas. Since the majority of clothes/accessories that my daughter wanted for Christmas were for her American Doll Kit, I did not purchase additional clothing items or accessories for Kailey. So, for her birthday… my daughter had a list of items she was hoping to get for Kailey. One of these items was the American Girls - Kailey’s Boogie Board.
For the remainder of this review I will refer to American Girls – Kailey’s Boogie Board simply as the boogie board…
~ If it involves water, it is a hit in this household! ~
It really was no surprise to me that my daughter choose this boogie board as one of the items she would love to get for Kailey. If it is water related, it will be a hit in this household! While the price of $20.00 for this boogie board did seem a bit steep, I knew that the quality would be good. What does the American Girl web site have to say about this boogies board? “Kailey’s boogie board is covered in silver starfish and has a wrist leash so she can hang onto it in the waves. It comes with a purple board bag and a board wax jar that’s filled with lip balm for you!”
This boogie board is adorable! It measures in at approximately 11 ½ inches tall 5 ¾ inches in width. It looks exactly like the photo image shown above. The boogie board is silver in color, with what looks like silver sticker starfish forming a pattern throughout the top and bottom of this board. Running down the center of this boogie board is a purple stripe with the words “American Girl” written on there three times. There is also an AG (American Girl) sticker on the bottom of this stripe in the colors of teal, yellow and purple. You don’t have to worry about any of these stickers peeling off because there is a protective plastic cover on this board. Don’t be fooled in thinking that this board can get wet though. When my daughter opened up this boogie board there was a slip of paper that states this board should not be immersed in water. At first I was a bit disappointed, but then… after looking at Kailey and realizing that she couldn’t get immersed in water herself, it wasn’t such a big deal. The purple leash is attached quite firmly onto the board and connects to a teal wrist band to go around Kailey’s wrist. I really like that fact that this board is so sturdy because Kailey can stand on it with no problems what-so-ever. I have even walked by and seen my daughter’s American Girl pets taking a ride on this board!
My daughter really likes the bag that comes with this boogie board. The majority of the fabric on this bag is vinyl, which is purple in color. On the very bottom of this bag is a purple mesh material. This, of course, reminds my daughter or her very own mesh swim bag! It has a white/purple stripe on the one side of the bag. It also has a matching AG sticker near the bottom of this stripe. My only concern with this entire accessory item would have to be the zipper on this bag. I have found it sometimes stick, so I have told my daughter to be very careful and not to pull too much when trying to open up the bag. On the up side, the zipper does have a cute connecting handle so that Kailey can lift it onto her shoulder and carry hands free. This handle also has clips so that if you want to remove it, you can. There is also a side pocket that zips open which can hold a few of Kailey’s smaller items. Take, for instance, the AG Boogie Balm (lip balm) that comes with the boogie board.
~ Can’t make it to the American Girl Store? ~
Never fear! If you can’t make it to the American Girl Store in Chicago or New York, there are a couple of other options for you. I have made several purchases via the American Girls web site at www.americangirl.com. I have found this web site easy to use. I have also phoned in catalog orders and have found that system easy to use as well. (The toll free number is below.) Either way you choose to place your order should be pain free.
For this purchase, I used the American Girl web site. As in the past, my shipment arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. One of the things you should know is that American Girl does a nice job in presenting their items. This boogie board came in a nice box that I found to make it very easy to wrap. This was nice so that I could better disguise this boogie board in wrapping paper!
~ Let’s go to the beach! ~
I am happy to say that this is another American Girl product that both my daughter and I recommend. Although it can not be immersed in water this has not stopped my daughter from playing with it. And what a cute accessory this is with Kailey’s wetsuit! (This is a review that I will be working on soon!)
As I mentioned above, this American Girl – Kailey’s boogie board sells for $20.00. I really feel that we have gotten our money’s worth with this item. Knowing that my daughter enjoys playing with it is worth the price alone. Knowing that this is a good quality product that should last for years to come, makes it even better! Who knows, maybe my daughter’s daughter will play with this boogie board one day!
