Pros: 55% water vs. Acuvue2's 40-something percent. Supposedly that makes them wetter. Who knows.
Cons: I had to remove the Biomedics 55s because my eyes were so irritated.
The Bottom Line: My eyes are irritated after having used them for just one day. I think I was prescribed these by a doctor who was looking to make a profit for himself.

Here's a consumer alert posted at 1800contacts-dot-com. Don't know how valid it is, but I do know that my new optometrist encouraged me to switch to them for no reason when I said I was perfectly happy with my Acuvue 2s. After less than a day, I had to remove the Biomedics 55s because my eyes were so irritated.
== CONSUMER ALERT FROM 1800CONTACTS ==
We carry the full range of Biomedics 55 contact lenses manufactured by Ocular Sciences. Although we would be happy to supply you these lenses, you should be aware of Ocular Sciences' business practices and their possible affect on your eye care provider.
Ocular Sciences aggressively markets these lenses to eye care providers on the basis that consumers will not be able to buy them from anyone other than eye care providers. For years, this manufacturer has encouraged eye care providers to prescribe its lenses as opposed to alternatives available from mail order and other sources as a means of protecting the economic self interest of eye care providers. Here are some quotes from this manufacturer's advertisements in optometric trade journals in recent years:
"Patients prescribed with Biomedics 55 UV are more likely to return to your office for replacement lenses (and exams) than are patients fit with consumer-branded products." (2000)
"Traditional eye care is being challenged. Mail order is rampant. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is offering your patients low priced disposables. The system is broken!" (1998)
"IF IT THREATENS YOUR PRACTICE, WE'LL SEE IT. Practitioner focused strategies help you defend against market predators. As the only major contact lens manufacturer that does not sell to non-professional Internet and mail-order resellers, we're on red alert for market predators..." (September 2001)
Some eye care providers, believing they are the sole source for Biomedics 55 lenses, prescribe them thinking this prevents their patients from shopping around and taking advantage of better prices and greater convenience available elsewhere. The question for you, the consumer, is whether you were prescribed this lens because it is the best one for you or because your eye care provider thought it guaranteed him/her all future sales of your contact lenses.
If you are interested in wearing a different contact lens, one available any place you chose to shop, you might consider requesting a prescription for a different brand during your next exam. In addition, if your eye care provider will only prescribe a contact lens that he/she believes you can't buy anywhere else, you might want to go elsewhere for your eye care.
