Decorating your home with old less than perfect pieces has become very popular. Some call it "Shabby Chic" others just refer to it as a Country style of decorating. No matter what you call it though it is allot of fun to decorate in this manner.
The book "American Junk" by Mary Randolph Carter showcases the Shabby Chic style perfectly. This book is really more pictures than narrative and is 239 pages packed full of pictures of what was once a cast-off now used in a very decorative and pleasing style.
The author takes us with her on her travels all over America visiting Flea Markets and Antique Stores along the way. She provides a brief narrative and tons of pictures of her finds all showcased in appealing arrangements. She lists where she found each item and the approximate prices for similar ones.
The ideas are endless in this book. You will find all sorts of imaginative uses for the most ordinary items. She really has a flair for setting up an arrangement and showing off even the simplest pieces. Her narrative is easy to read and offers glimpes into her personal life as well as tidbits about the people she met at the various stores she has gone too.
The best part of the book however is the pictures. They are a real trip down memory lane and provide a great start to using your own junk in creative ways. The pictures are all taken by the author. This isn't a book that offers detailed information about the collectible items. It is more a book of ideas rather than facts.
If you are into collecting old things you will enjoy browsing through this book. It is the kind of book that would be great to keep on the coffee table as it can be picked up from time to time and the pictures enjoyed. It is a great conversation book as talk just naturally evolves from the old style items. You'll find Aunt Mabel remarking that she remembers when they used that kind of hand mixer.
In the back of the book she lists the names and address' of all the shops she visits in the book. There is also a listing of Newspapers, directories and guides to Flea Markets which is very helpful. Copyright date is 1992.
If you enjoy Flea Markets and Junking in general give this book a read!
