kuuleimomi's Full Review: American Pie 2 by Original Soundtrack
It might come as a shock, but I love American Pie 2 Soundtrack. More surprising since I have not watched the movie itself, though frankly I cant quite feel the loss. This is a perfect morning disk. I usually put this in my CD player (am I the last person on earth who still uses those?) and rush to school. Pop-punk works in mysterious ways, you know, even for the best of us, who dig Franz Ferdinand and Ani Difranco. And I dont give a flying puck that all of the songs are about love with a wee mix of drugs (ab)use, it works almost as well as that good old theme song from early seasons of Queer as Folk (for waking up purposes).
CD features Blink 182, Green Day, Alien Ant Farm (youre sure to remember their one and only hit that wasnt even theirs I had to say that, because Good (For a Woman), the song they perform here, knocks my socks off and rehabilitates them in my eyes), Fenix TX (land the second blockbuster after All My Fault sorry, second for me; I shouldve made it clear when I was talking about Franz Ferdinand and Ani Difranco fans that I meant myself). Theres also Sum 41 and 3 Doors Down. Im personally not a huge fan of former, but they sing here Fat Lip and some of us might have memories from four years ago associated with this (no, Im not talking about myself Im not!). As for 3 Doors Down, they hit it hard with another tearjerker ballad (Be Like That) and quite honestly I like it. And heres the perfect time to praise this collection for perfect timing (pun intended) punk songs are mixed with a few slow songs, like the mentioned one and Always Getting Over You by Angela Ammons. I dont really like this song and not because track number eight usually pops up right when I need to take a finish spurt from underground station to my class and a ballad is the last thing that could turn me into Marion Jones, but simply because I dont like this song. There are another two slow songs in the very end of collection (I Will by Lucia and Halo by Oleander), they are good, but I almost never get that far, because when I put this disk in my player Im in the mood for pop-punk and it ends with Sum 41. Very symbolic, if you know what I mean.
Besides the bands mentioned above youll get to enjoy the spirit of Left Front Tire, they are more in the Sum 41 league but outperform them instrumentally and vocally. American Hi-Fi go a little bit different from most of the bands on the disc and rock, though they are not the only one, who rock me. The song that stands out (and not necessary in a good way) is Split This Room In Half, (I'm Gonna) by Uncle Kracker. I do like it sometimes, because its rap features great energy, but it also gets annoying halfway into the track. And then again theres a series of fine pop-punk songs (I just cant lose pop before punk): Jettingham sing about Cheating (and Santa and leaving with a broken heart and broken nose; I always sing along, people around dont get it, though), Flying Blind try to find their girl with a curly hair, who only likes them when theyre stoned in Smokescreen (is that a hint? Whos on drugs? Remind me to tell you this joke later).
One song left! The Exit sing about tragic story of Susan. Probably the only song that I really listen to every single word to understand what exactly happened to poor Susan. Instrumentally this is a very simple punk song, but I can understand every single word they sing. It must be pop then! Funny, but this track starts almost exactly as the next one by Sum 41. Hmmm (Scroll to the part above when I was talking about symbolism in punk music, grrr.)
Since this is an ECD lets take it out of CD player and put it in PC. Purdy intro comes in with 3 Doors Down (they make me hate them, I swear) and a slideshow of pictures from the movie. I can see I have not lost much. Theres also a trailer. Oooh, I definitely have not lost much. Theres a bunch of pictures (28 to be precise) in photo gallery to enjoy to Flying Blind, screensaver to download to Left Front Tire and the web site to visit (like you want that). You dont want screensaver, because its just a white screen with American Pie 2 written in frame. You can pull any letter off with your mouse and it will return to its place. Wow, magic!
The drug joke I promised.
-- Sweetie, why are you eating porridge with your hands?
-- Whos on drugs? Im not on drugs!
