Amerisuites: Vegas' Worst
Written: Jan 17 '02
Pros:not too far from the Strip, good view of landing airplanes
Cons:surly employees, plastic feel, pales in comparison to anywhere else, no character
The Bottom Line: Swingin' singles, homely families, and boring business types alike should steer clear of this place.
My friends and I were placed in the Amerisuites this past summer by Hotwire. Although we were disappointed to be placed in one of the few non-gaming hotels in Vegas for our weekend, we figured it would at least be a nice place because Hotwire rated it 3 stars and we're pretty big fans of Embassy Suites. Well, let me tell you, Amerisuites is a far cry from Embassy suites. Whereas the latter usually can be counted on for spacious, tasteful rooms and pleasant ambiance (in fact, the Embassy Suites that's right next to the Amerisuites has a beautiful lobby with waterfalls and Swans), Amerisuites had a depressing hospital feel to it.
If you successfully make it from the hotel front door to the elevator, you will have walked through the lobby, which is adjacent to the (10'x20') swimming pool. The hotel restaurant is nestled in the middle somewhere, but it was unclear to us whether the restaurant ever served food (including room service). In summary, all of the hotel's amenities are crammed in such a small area that they are easily overlooked.
If the lobby was unimpressive, then our "suite" was downright pitiful. Picture your basic Day's Inn room with a sink, a microwave, a love seat, a bed, and one of those accordion hospital room dividers. Now imagine the cheapest bedding money can buy (no sheets on sofa bed at all), an overmatched air conditioner, and several pieces of not so tasteful corporate art.
One would think that the owners of such a dreary hotel might go out of their way to hire enthusiastic employees to help alleviate a bit of its gloom. Wrong again. I can honestly say that not a single staffer of Amerisuites was even remotely polite to us. In fact, my friend left his cell phone in our room and when he attempted to retrieve it after checkout, was forced to wait in the lobby for an hour while the receptionist chatted it up with her boy friend on the phone.
My Amerisuites experience taught me that: not all extended stay hotels are created equal, and I would have been much happier in the dingiest of casinos for which I would have paid substantially less. I feel compelled to say something positive about the Amerisuites before closing this review since they did provide me with shelter: our room had a fine view of the airport approach (worry not, sound proof windows).
