| BeeCharmer's Full Review: Ames Deluxe Chrome-Plated Hand Weeder |
Once again spring showers and sunshine have brought me an abundance of flourishing flora to my Midwest landscape. And as time permits, I am out in my flowerbeds and containers, as well as the vegetable and herb gardens ready to displace the various weeds and grasses that encroach upon them.
Armed with several garden tools and sheer determination, I tackle one section after another; the Ames Deluxe Hand Weeder being one of my tools of choice for the smaller, heavily planted areas.
This weeder also makes short work of pesky weeds in my lawn, and unlike with the larger Garden Claw, this tool’s forked tip and slim shaft leaves minimal damage to the healthy grass surrounding the offensive weed. In fact, with careful positioning and complete root removal, the area can generally just be tamped back down with little or know evidence of weeding have been done.
Along the raised fence line bordering the backyard and the garden path winding through our property, I prefer to pull weeds out by hand and (occasionally) treat pavement cracks with a weeding solution, due to minimal maneuverability and probable damage to the tool from these hard surfaces.
And in large plant beds, this tool is helpful but not necessarily timesaving. Within these larger planting beds, where areas are more spacious and there is plenty of room to work, I usually opt for my Garden Claw for deep-rooted, pricklier varieties that I encounter.
Tool Features
About a foot or so in length, the Ames Deluxe Hand Weeder has a tool head and shaft which is constructed of chrome plated steel. Both longwearing and durable, this hand tool is unlikely to bend, break or rust in conjunction with general, normal usage for several years after initial purchase.
With its overall length and forked tip, this hand weeder makes even the removal of dandelions, roots and all, a relatively simple task. It cuts through soil easily and goes to the necessary depth to loosen and pry up those pesky weeds without backbreaking effort.
The vinyl, contoured handgrip inherent of this tool also makes for comfortable, steady gripping during use. And, as with the majority of garden tools I purchase, the Ames Deluxe Hand Weeder has a convenient opening for hanging it upon a hook or nail within a tool shed, greenhouse or garage.
Quick and Easy Cleanup
To store after use, simply rinse off any garden debris and soil in a bucket of water or running hose and wipe dry with a rag. Although this, nor any other Ames tool I have purchased within the past two years, have shown no signs of rusting, I do not store my tools wet. This helps to prevent premature rusting from beginning in small scrapes and cuts incurred during their use.
Recommendation
If you are seeking an alternative to chemical pesticides for your lawn, this tool brings about their removal without causing the bare patches other tools such as the Garden Claw or trowel leave behind.
For lawns, small beds and containers, this tool is a wonderful companion. For large planting beds and garden plots that have become overgrown and dense with tall weed growth, opt for another product. That time consuming prospect is not what this tool was made for. The Ames Deluxe Hand Weeder is helpful and effective for general weeding, not clearing large plots of earth.
The Ames Deluxe Hand Weeder is an effective weeding tool, widely available for an affordable price. This one will be with you through years of weeding with a minimum of overall care and maintenance. Making the removal of garden and lawn weeds quick and easy, while helping to keep the grass, beds and containers looking their best without hand-tiring labor.
The Ames brand is one I highly recommend to prospective consumers for product quality and durability.
