| barronfujimoto's Full Review: Ames Dual Tread Edger |
I read a couple of epinions about the single tread and decided I would give it a try. My DIY store only had the double tread model, so I bought it. After using it to edge my front lawn, I have to echo the sentiments of other users. Since this was my first time the lawn was edged, it was a real workout! I have St. Augustine grass, and it was coming over the driveway and sidewalk about 1 1/2 inches on average. You really need to work at it; although the blades cut the grass, it is slow going, and you need to be in fairly good health to do an average yard. I would say I edged about 100' in just over an hour (short breathers not included). As most have said, if you do it every week or two, it shouldn't be so difficult. I feel that way too. It takes me only about 10 minutes to edge the same places if I do it every week. The edges look so much nicer and straighter than when I just used my string trimmer.
The small tag on the edger shows how to edge around curves. I couldn't imagine using it on any curves with my tough St. Augustine! This is a tool where you have to use brute force (for the first time), and edging in a straight line along a straight sidewalk was tough enough.
My main complaint about this edger is that the 3 bolts holding the wheels together all came loose. I was almost finished, when I noticed that it wasn't cutting very well. I looked down at the ground and saw a lock washer on the sidewalk. I looked at the edger, and I had lost 2 nuts and 2 washers, and the third bolt was loose. I found the 2 nuts, and only one washer, put those back on and tightened them up. I don't know why they would come loose, except that since it was the "first edging" of the year, it was rougher than usual.
As others have said, make sure you wear gloves when edging, unless you like blisters.
All in all, I am pretty happy with the edger, although if I didn't find those bolts, I probably would be cursing! ;) As long as you realize that you will have to use your muscles, I think you will be satisfied too. I am glad I put in the hard work; you really feel a sense of accomplishment after using it. Plus, the edge of the grass looks great!
