| phoenixx's Full Review: Ames True Temper Clog Free Rake |
If I were in a more creative mode, I would write an "Ode To My Blister Free Rake". Since I'm not in a mood to wax poetic, however; I'll stick to a simple review of the Ames True Temper Clog Free Rake.
Much like my Garden Claw (see previous review), this has turned out to be a simple, cost effective, easy to use, reliable tool. Sure, I've used a rake before. Usually one of those rakes with the wooden handle and thin metal tines. The wooden handles usually have no grip material anywhere on the handle - leading to blisters and splinters. The metal tines tend to bend, twist, become misaligned and generally "spear" leaves, requiring you to stop raking every few minutes and free the trapped leaves before raking any more.
Not so the Ames True Temper Clog Free Rake. It's wooden handle is covered in a nice foam rubber grip that molds to the users hand, and it's plastic, reinforced tines have closed triangular ends that prevent clogging altogether. I have a very large yard, and was able to rake for 5 straight hours without a single blister or need for a break to rest - very fluid raking motion, no clogs, and did I mention no blisters yet?
I used this rake to rake grassy areas, under bushes and trees, even in those areas around the shrubbery known for collecting old leaves - it got all of them out just fine, with little effort on my part. My one complaint would be that it is a traditional wide rake surface - it would be very nice if Ames created a "little brother" to this rake, with the same long handle and clog free tines, but a narrow rake surface to get into some of the smaller, hard to reach places with less effort.
I did have to rake across a cement walkway, and noticed that on a hard, paved surface the rake loses some of it's ability to grab leaves, and required a tad more of a workout from me. That said, I don't do enough raking on a hard, paved surface for that to temper my high opinion of the True Temper rake.
How would I rate the product? With it's sturdy design, clog free concept, blister free handle grip, light weight, and ease of use I'd give it a 10, hands down.
