| texas-swede's Full Review: Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth |
A couple of weeks ago we visited the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. We live in Dallas so Fort Worth is only 50 minutes away. The museum is located in Fort Worth's cultural district and so are many other museums. The primary purpose of our trip to the Amon Carter museum was to see a couple of photography exhibits, "Masterworks of American Photography: Moments in time", and "Circle of Friends: Portraits of Artists". My 12-year old son is taking a photography class and his teacher asked the kids to visit photography exhibits.
About the Amon Carter Museum
The Amon Carter Museum was founded based on the will of a wealthy newspaper man, Amon G. Carter. Originally it contained his personal art collection; however, the art collection in the museum has been expanded and the museum typically also hosts multiple exhibitions of various kinds. I would say that the visiting exhibitions, is a main focus of this museum. It is not a very big museum, but it features a little bit of everything. One of the big advantages of this museum is that there is no admission fee. The purpose of the museum is to make as many varieties of art as possible accessible to as many as possible at no cost to them.
The museum was built in 1961 and it is a very modern museum with an elegant and modern architecture. The museum is not a modern art museum even though it looks like a modern art museum. The museum features a wide range of art including modern art, photography, 19th century paintings, and sculptures. The museum seems to have one particular focus on art from the Wild West. I should add that the museum is handicap accessible, has elevators, and provides assistive listening devices. The bathrooms were clean and fresh and the museum has a store.
Our visit to the Amon Carter Museum
When we arrived at the museum we were positively surprised to see the nicely landscaped garden and the elegant modern building, and I was especially pleased not to have to pay anything to enter the museum. The first floor featured a number of mostly American paintings, 19th century photographs, and sculptures with depictions of the Wild West, American landscapes, and 19th and 20th century Americans. Included in the permanent collection is Amon Carters collection of 400 paintings, sculptures, and drawings by the artists Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell.
The exhibitions were located on the second and floor and we were particularly interested in the two photography exhibits. The two exhibits featured a lot of interesting and beautiful photographs; however, one exhibit that unexpectedly caught our attention was "Views and Visions Prints of the American West 1820 to 1970". It featured paintings and sculptures of breathtaking landscapes, Native Americans, wild animals, Buffaloes, and Cowboys. Some of the early paintings were created before the existence of photography and they tended to be very "picture accurate". Thanks to these paintings we know how the American landscape looked like before the event of photography. I should add that a guide joined us and showed us around the exhibit and explained the pieces to us.
Parking and Miscellaneous Information
The museum is open from 10AM to 5PM, except Thursday when it is open from 10AM to 8PM. On Sunday it is open from noon to 5PM. On Mondays it is closed. The museum has a parking lot (free parking) but there is also free parking across the street (the Lancaster Lot) where we parked. The museum is located on

Final Recommendation
This museum features some interesting pieces and it continuously hosts several exhibitions. Since admission is free it is a pretty good deal. You should stop by if you visit Fort Worth.
I would like to say thank you to Di (SURGRN911) for adding this museum to epinions.
I am also adding this review to the Texas+Sweden write off and the annual Lean-n-Mean write-off.
