Cons: Can be expensive compared to other brands/make your own
The Bottom Line: For now, this will be my go-to chili. Not too expensive, not too spicy, yet flavorful, healthy, and easy to make. I will probably keep experimenting, though.

I LOVE chili but can't seem to make it from scratch very well. I have tried various seasoning packets, pre-made bags and cans, and have still always felt as though there was something better for me out there...I am a vegetarian, and I like a flavorful chili, not too spicy-maybe I was just being too picky?
On a recent trip to Whole Foods Market, I perused the prepared foods aisle and came upon Amy's Organic Black Bean Chili Mild. I love black beans, and saw that it was a vegan chili, and decided, despite the $2.79 price to give it a try...since that day, this $33-12 pack has come in handy to stock up fast and save some money!
The 14.7 oz can has 'about 2' servings. This certainly seemed nutritious-just under a cup of chili had 200 calories, 2g fat (no trans or saturated), 31g Carbs (15g fiber, 3g sugar), 13g of protein. Also definitely worth mentioning is that each serving contains 30% USRDA each of Iron and Calcium. There are 680mg of sodium. Although none are a concern of my particular diet, this is also dairy, lactose and soy-free as well as certified Kosher.
I poured half the can into a microwave bowl, and must admit, I wasn't looking at a whole lot of food. Mostly beans, with a few visible pieces of onions and peppers, this smelled good but I was glad I had a side of veggies for backup. I thought of eating the entire can, but decided to be a good girl. Besides, I could always go back if I was still hungry, right? It took almost no time to heat up-after the first 30 seconds it was bubbling on the edges and at a minute I decided it was ready. Steam cam out as I mixed it up, and my handful of shredded cheddar that I threw on top melted almost instantaneously. Points for a quick meal!
After giving it a minutes to cool, I dug in. This was a different tasting chili-the black beans really changed up the flavors-and I liked it. It was hearty, flavorful without being spicy (I could've handled a little more kick, actually!) and surprisingly filling. I really would have like there to be more vegetables-I am trying to figure a way to stretch out a can by adding more onions/peppers, but don't want to lose the intensity of flavoring. The 'sauce' was thick enough that I think it may be able to survive a mild supplement, but we'll have to see. I was not stuffed after eating the recommended serving size, but it certainly was better than I anticipated. I have a new pre-made chili-Amy's Organic Black Bean Chili Mild!
