Ana Mandara is one of the most beautiful and romantic restaurants in San Francisco. When entering the main room, with it's high ceiling and arching central staircase, one gets the feeling of being in Vietnam.
The food is also extraordinary. Items are imported directly from Vietnam, such as the Basa, a white fish from the coast. The chef's family still owns a plantation and coffee and tea from that plantation are served in the restaurant. The estate green tea has a unique grassy flavor.
One of the best items on the menu is an appetizer of fresh dungeness crab served on a piece of hollow bamboo. The crab is impeccably fresh and is allowed to speak for itself, seasoned only with a little lemon juice. The before mentioned basa is also expertly prepared and served on a bed of fresh pea sprouts (the tender pea sprouts are available as a side order as well).
Everything else I have had at the restaurant is prepared with equal care and top ingredients. I highly recommend this restaurant for a romantic dinner with your partner or to bring out of town company for an authentic Vietnamese experience.
