mql1208's Full Review: Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil Strawburn
I didn't really consider all the changes that dyeing my natural blonde hair to red might include. Clothes, makeup, and the biggest telltale sign that your new hair color isn't nature's choice --- eyebrows! While browsing around for a new makeup color palette, I stumbled upon Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil in Strawburn! In addition to camouflaging the natural color of my brows, I also hoped the pencil would fill in my thinning brows without looking like I filled them in.
Trying to describe color is tricky business, but if I were pressed, I'd name this pencil taupe or dark blonde and few (I think) would argue the point. In other words, Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil in Straw(berry)(au)burn implies red, and yet I fail to see why, when I look at the pencil, draw on a piece of white paper, or apply it to my brows. I'd say Strawburn is suited for dark blonde, light to medium shades of brown, but not auburn, and not strawberry blonde.
As for the texture, it's fine. Neither too soft, nor too hard and waxy, with a fine point tip that makes application easy enough to feather into your brow line. Located conveniently on the other end of the pencil is a good quality brow brush to further blend. I use a light touch but found that the pencil blended well and stayed put without smearing or migrating away from my brow. Washes away without the need for makeup remover.
The entire pencil is about 6 1/2" long, made from wood, and smells just like a no.2 lead pencil. Brushed aluminum end caps, with a sufficiently snug fit protect the "spooley" brush and pencil tip. You're on your own for a sharpener, but it fits in my cheapy no name eye pencil sharpener I've had forever. Didn't need to sharpen, but I checked it out for the review. No issues to report.
The pencil is fine, and maybe it's just me, but I fail to see any notable difference between this $22.00 item versus an inexpensive brow pencil from Maybelline in taupe. Okay, there's the convenience of the spooley brush on Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil, but I shelled out the $22.00 for what I anticipated to be a unique color. While visiting the Anastasia website, Strawburn does appear to have a red tone. Don't let it fool you! Strawburn didn't address my needs and I won't restock.
If eyebrow pencils are a high priority for you, perhaps the price tag is worth it. If I factor out my objection to color, I'd say this is a 3 star item, but since I can't, I'm deducting a star for calling taupe Strawburn. Since most women, like me, would be drawn to this product because of color, I can't recommend. Easy to find at a number of online sources, or your local Sephora and Nordstrom retailers. It's also available in Blonde, Ash Blonde/Taupe, Medium Ash/Medium Brown, Ultimate Brown/Soft Brown, Brunette/Dark Brown.
I didn't love Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil Strawburn, but do like Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel in Caramel. In fact, I like it enough to try out some of Anastasia Beverly Hills' other products for face, eyes, and brows.
