| fuche_bu's Full Review: Anchor Steam Beer |
The Boston Beer Company, brewers of Samuel Adams beers, generally gets credit for spearheading the craft brew movement in America. While they were certainly at the forefront of advancing the good word, there is another brewery that predates Sam Adams and deserves credit for pioneering better beer.
That would be the Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco. Mention of the Anchor name often causes a reverent pause for reflection among beer lovers. This brewery was originally founded in 1896. Fritz Maytag (yes, from THE Maytag family) rescued the brewery from closure in 1965. The rest, as the pundits say, is beer history. This brewery is renown throughout the entire world.
Anchor Steam is the flagship of the brewery. It is made with a very unique technique. It is a bottom fermenting beer brewed at ale temperatures in shallow vessels. This technique was used by California brewers before refrigeration made it across the wild frontier. Anchor continues to use the technique for the Steam beer to this day.
This all malt brew ends up with traits of both ale and lager beers. It is always a great pleasure to enjoy a pint at a pub or to pour a bottle at home. This beer is clean and dry and very rewarding. It has a malty, toasty flavor that is never overbearing. The balance between ale and lager characteristics lends to a very refined drinking experience. It stands at 5% abv so it is not a strong beer either. That allows for consuming a couple if you are so inclined.
This beer is versatile. It can highlight a meal or accent a football game. It makes for a great beer at all day music festivals in the summer months. Anchor Steam is a classic due to uniqueness and all around quality. I like Rice-a-Roni but I think that this is the true San Francisco treat. Fritz ought to send some of this beer to the lonely Maytag repairman.
