| jps246's Full Review: Robert Cahill - Ancient Mysteries |
Are you looking to explore some of New Englands more mysterious areas? New Englands Ancient Mysteries is a good introduction to some of the mysterious locations and artifacts that have been found throughout the New England countryside.
The author, Robert Ellis Cahill takes the reader on a journey through the strange and mysterious locations and discoveries in New England. From Iberic text inscriptions and Celtic faces carved into stones to strange stone circles and structures, New Englands Ancient Mysteries gives an overview to what doesnt fit quite so neatly in the established history of New England.
The book includes information on:
Stone carvings and text inscriptions found throughout New England
Temples to the Sun
Underground Chambers
Great Stone Knight
The Holy Fort
Coming in at just 88 pages, extensive detail on the various locations and finds is not given. Instead New Englands Ancient Mysteries provides a quick overview of the various discoveries and locations that includes information on their location and some background on the research that has surrounded them. It also gives readers enough to wet their appetite for New Englands mysteries and makes you want to go out and learn more.
Did you know that the location known as Americas Stonehenge is aligned precisely in several different astronomical ways and appears to have been constructed by Europeans and not the Native Americans? In addition to Americas Stonehenge there are many other stone structures that are astronomically aligned throughout New England. Or how about the fact that Celtic inscriptions were discovered on Monhegan Island in Maine and have been translated to read as cargo platforms for ships from Phoencia?
The book is filled with many similar finds and discoveries that just go to show that not everything can easily and neatly fit into the established history of the New England region. There may have been more going on in this area than just the settlement by the Native Americans. Vikings, Celts, and even the Romans and Greeks may have been exploring and settling in New England. Evidence exists here and there and New Englands Ancient Mysteries tries to pull together that information and present a quick overview of it.
An easy read, New Englands Ancient Mysteries doesnt go into details and each chapter reads more like a story than a review of various mysteries in New England. Chapters themselves are disjointed from one another and it is easy to pick up the book and read about one area that you are interested in.
When discussing mysterious locations, if they are accessible to the public, instructions on how to get there are given to the reader. For other locations which are not open to the public, Cahill makes mention of this fact and provides some information on how to go about obtaining permission to explore the area. Cahill also provides the location of artifacts that are kept in museums and historically societies throughout New England. So you dont just have to read the book, you can get out there and see these things for yourself.
One of the few faults of this book is the fact that no bibliography or list of books for additional information is given. Should you want to study any of these mysteries further, you will have to find the literature on your own.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of unexplained mysteries in the world and New Englands Ancient Mysteries is a good introduction to the strange and mysterious in New England. Maybe Vikings did settle here, maybe the Celts, Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans did too but whatever you believe, you cannot deny the fact that these mysterious places and mysterious artifacts do exist and have been discovered throughout New England.
Draw your own conclusions on the mysteries, but enjoy learning about and getting a chance to further understand them with New Englands Ancient Mysteries.
