jly86's Full Review: Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None
I have to say that this is definitely one of my favorite books. Agatha Christie has a way of making you suspect that the murderer could be each and every one of her characters, and then at some points you believe that none of them could have possibly done it.
I liked this particular book best out of all the novels she has ever written because the crime is ongoing. In the rest of her books, a murder is committed and a detective must figure out the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. However, in "And Then There Were None," (also entitled "Ten Little Indians") more than one murder is committed throughout the book.
Basically, ten people are stuck on an island. They find a poem in one of the rooms, titled "Ten Little Indians," that eerily suggested that one by one, a Little Indian is picked off. When a few murders occur that seem to fit the poem, the inhabitants figure out that there is a murderer among them that is using the poem as an inspiration! They are slowly picked off, one by one. There are many deceptions throughout the book, though. Beware! Things are not always what they seem.
What made this book unique from all of Christie's other books is that the characters die in a creative way. It is not the typical shot to the head, or the poison in the cognac. However sadistic that may sound, it is true. It makes for an interesting read.
Did you like the show "Survivor"? This book could be compared to that show. The characters make alliances with one another, and sometimes break them.
The only thing missing in this book is her quirky, well-loved detective Hercule Poirot. Although he obviously doesn't fit into the plot, I missed his egotistical remarks and the creative and dramatic way that he always presented his conclusions.
