Over this past weekend my fiance and I took a road trip to visit his brother in downtown Los Angeles. Saturday night we found ourselves (and six other people from my fiance's family) sitting in this quaint little restaurant instead of attending the Great Guinness Toast.
I was really disappointed over missing something that I had been looking forward to for quite sometime, so I decided I might as well console myself with food. Let me tell you that this was certainly the place to do it! There was so much food on my plate at the end of the meal that I had enough left over for breakfast and lunch the next day.
An entire section of the menu was dedicated to gravy. "Smothered" was the title that these entree's bared. Smothered fried chicken, smothered meat loaf, smothered fried steak..., it was too much for me to handle. I jumped down to the next section to find most of the cajun dishes.
"The spicier the better" being my motto, I decided (after being convinced that the catfish contained absolutely no bones) on the Louisiana cajun catfish. For sides, out of the choices of about 15 or so, I ordered the hush puppies and the mashed potatoes. To top that off, just about all of the dishes came with rice, gravy and plenty of cornbread.
By the time the food came I was absolutely starving (not because it took long. Actually, it arrived in a pretty decent amount of time considering we had a party of 8 plus a screaming child). I took a look at all of the food sitting in front of me and honestly thought that I would be able to finish it all with not problem what so ever (it's true people, the eye's really are bigger than the stomach). I ended up only finishing half of the meal, if that.
Unfortunately, I'd have to say that if you are looking for extremely spicy food, the only way you will get it here is to douse your food with hot sauce. Other than that, it was pretty good
After the meal, as I basked in my sin of gluttony, I decided that I wasn't so disappointed about my toast after all. Instead of being manhandled or pushed around inside an overcrowded bar, I was sitting at a table, being waited on by courteous staff members (who did all they could to help with that screaming child), fed a good meal, and surrounded by soon to be family members.
It wasn't that bad of a night after all. There's always next year for the toast, right?
