MsHooterville's Full Review: Angel Thierry Mugler Perfume 1.7oz for Women
The first time I became aware of Thierry Mugler's "Angel" fragrance was on a visit to Paris in the summer of 1999. It wasn't because I caught the scent on a chic Parisian, or because I was apprehended while passing a perfume counter by an eager sales associate.
We were strolling along the street at dusk, window shopping. And it just jumped out at me like a crystal blue beacon, that star-shaped bottle, lighted from above. It just looked beautiful, so of course, it had to smell beautiful, too.
Within a few days, I had the chance to experience "Angel" for myself with a department store tester. A beautiful young blonde wearing a soft blue sweater that matched the bottle told me all about "On-gel" in her delightful accent. But the light, sensual floral-Oriental scent surprised me by being even more beautiful than the bottle promised.
I immediately bought a small spray bottle, and didn't wait until I got back to the states to begin using it. For the duration of the trip, I enjoyed it and reveled in it.
First Introduced in 1992
When I first saw it in Paris in 1999, Angel was brand new to me. But I read that this scent has been available since 1992. Maybe it just takes a very long time to get to Omaha or even to the United States.
However, I had been told that you could find Angel in large department stores like Macy's and Lord & Taylor. Even so, I think it must have taken some time to become mainstream, even in Europe.
The pale blue box with black accents seem to reflect Thierry Mugler's signature colors. At the Galleries Lafayette in Paris, where I bought my first bottle of Angel, I saw a whole Mugler clothing department, which was done in the same shades.
But looking at the prices of the clothing, it's clear that a bottle of Angel is going to be the priciest Mugler item I'll ever own.
Now It's Here in Omaha
Before I left Paris, I bought two more bottles of Angel -- one at the duty-free shop at DeGaulle Airport and another on the Air France flight home.
Not knowing where or how to order it from the United States, I wanted to be sure I had plenty, and that I got it at a reasonable price. Even though I gave one bottle to my mother, the two I had left lasted me for almost a year.
The longevity may be attributed to the staying power of the fragrance -- it lasts all day without being overwhelming when you first apply it.
Angel has become my daily fragrance, replacing my other favorite, YSL Champagne, which has been discontinued.
And more than any other fragrance I've worn, people (mostly women) can identify Angel easily and comment on it warmly.
Visiting Montreal in the summer of 2000, I found a great price on a large, refillable bottle of Angel from a subway fragrance vendor -- under $100. She also was kind enough to throw in a mini-bottle with a little silvertone stopper.
I'm still using that bottle, and have refilled it once here in Omaha, where Angel is exclusively available at Von Maur (our "Nordstroms")for a set price of $65.00.
Here's a tip about the refillable bottle: Use what you have until you're down to fumes before taking it for a refill, as the cost is the same even if you have a bit left. But good news -- if you have an empty miniature bottle, you can get that filled as well for nothing extra.
And yet one more tip: Spending $120 to $125 for the taller, larger bottle (which comes with a refilling funnel), you will be able to refill your spray bottle more than twice. I haven't tried that yet, but a lady I met at a Hanae Mori counter at Niemann-Marcus pointed it out to me.
If you're not a regular fragrance fan, try a sample of Angel, because I believe you'll wear it well, enjoy it, and feel a little like you're in Paris -- even if you've never been there!
