The Angelique Collection
The Angelique Collection is a DVD Boxed Set of European films based on the long out-of-print popular series of French novels by Anne and Serge Golon. This 3 DVD set contains 5 movies directed by Bernard Borderie:
Angélique, marquise des anges (1964)
Merveilleuse Angélique (1965)
Angélique et le roy (1966)
Indomptable Angélique (1967)
Angélique et le sultan (1968)
The Angelique series is a French historical epic that follows the young and beautiful Angelique (Michele Mercier) as she confronts danger, love and loss against the backdrop of 17th century France. The individual movies are faithful adaptations to the original stories and fit together as episodes in one long epic so you will want to watch them all and in order.
In Angelique, marquise des anges, we first meet Angelique, a young girl from Poitou. She foils an assassination plot against the Kings Brother, is spurned by her cousin, Philippe de Plessis-Bellieres (Claude Giraud), loved by childhood friend Nicolas (Guiliano Gemma), married to the mysterious and frightening Count Jeoffrey de Peyrac (Robert Hossein), protected by Desgrez (Jean Rochefort) and desired by Louis XIV (Jacques Toja) - all which sets in motion the action in the following films (where she encounters adventures from Paris underworld, to the Court of Versailles and beyond).
The Angelique Collection is unrated, but is a bit racy compared to American films made at the same time (there is a bit of nudity, frank sexuality and violence). The costumes and scenery are beautiful and the production values are very high for the time that these films were made.
For anyone who is a fan of Angelique, you will want to add this to your collection. If you have not yet met Angelique, then this is your chance.
