Petmate Pet Hair Magnet: The Pet Product that is Saving my Love Life

Written: Jul 02 '03 (Updated Aug 13 '03)
Pros:It picks up off of all cloth surfaces that I have tried it on
Cons:You have to pick up the ball of hair at the end of cleaning
The Bottom Line: Petmate has come up with a great cheap product that helps control pet hair around your home in those hard to reach areas.

I know that I have mentioned previously about my fiance’s fixation with my dog’s/Casey’s hair. What is so interesting to me is that it is never pointed out that our fat cat, Junior, also sheds quite a bit as well. Well this is the explanation that I have received from my fiancé, “Casey’s hair is like straw and it is like a porcupine sticking into everything he touches or lays on. His ears and head and neck are soft but the rest of him is just not nice to pet.”

Let me tell you the real down to earth truth, the man is a Cat Lover, and it barely has much to do with Casey’s hair. (I have heard though that men who are Cat Lovers make excellent mates because that means they aren’t control freaks since you can’t control cats. So this isn’t an awful thing, just annoying at times.) So daily we bicker back and forth in jest about Casey and his hair. However, my hair (because I shed quite a bit) and the cat’s hair never seems to be brought up, interesting because he SHEDS too. So this is how the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet walked into our lives….

Petmate Pet Hair Magnet Catches our Attention

It was Christmas of 2001 that we saw the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet for $9.99 at PetSmart and I thought it would make a cute side gift for my brother who has two white Labradors. I was also skeptical though because it said on the packaging: “As Seen on TV.” We have been roped into a few of those “As Seen on TV ads,” like Nads Wax Hair Removal System, and the results were not only a rip-off but painful as well.

Anyways, I have been to my brother’s house and if my fiancé thinks for one moment that he has it bad with Casey he has never lived with my brother’s dogs because it is hair galore! So I put it under our Christmas tree next to my brother’s other gift in hopes that it would help him out with his upholstery. Well after all the presents were opened and my family had left, the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet sat in its’ bag by itself, forgotten.

I would say that weeks turned into months and my brother didn’t pick up the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet so by March I was ready to break it out. I figured it wasn’t his ideal side Christmas gift if he left it here and he had received his other “real” present so my fiancé and I decided to give it a try.

Description and Directions of the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet

Now here is where I would normally include the directions that come with the packaging but I no longer have that so I will describe the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet and how to use it on my own. The Petmate Pet Hair Magnet is an extremely miniaturized version of a squeegee that you would use to wipe down the dirt off your windows at the local gas station. It is bright canary yellow that is approximately 5” long which has a nice firm grip to it. The width of the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet is about 7”, which is the part you would be using to get rid of that pet hair. The name of the product is on the merchandise itself as well as its’ patent and copyright.

In order to use the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet, you would grip the handle and in short strokes of about a foot long bring the instrument towards you picking up the hair along the way. As you continue this motion you will see that the hair itself will begin to clump up which you can then pick up and dispose of.

What Does the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet Work on?

As far as my experience, the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet has worked on everything I have tried which I will list for you below:

Couches
Pillows
Carpets
Car Upholstery as long as it is cloth
Quilt on the Bed
Sofa Covers
Seat Cushions
Drapes

I have found that the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet has worked on all cloth surfaces that I have attempted to use it on. It does what it claims to do which is to magnetize and attract the hair or as Petmate says, “easily remove pet hair from carpets, drapes, couches, chairs, and car seats.” I have found it especially hand around my baseboards and corners that the vacuum just doesn’t seem to pick up as well even with it’s attachments.

About the Company PetMate

There was a man named Ben Doskocil who started in 1961 in his own garage trying to design a crate for pets on airlines. He was the first to create the pet carriers in plastic that you now see all over the place at PetSmart. Now Doskocil Manufacturing Company is the nations leading manufacturer of Pet Products. The purpose of Doskocil Manufacturing Company is to “Make pets feel at home,” and I know with their doggie igloos and beds as well as for cats, they are doing just that. They have created the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet as well as all sorts of other products which you can look at on their website at www.petmate.com.
Just a note to all: I also enjoyed the fact that the website itself was so user friendly and gives you more pet knowledge of dogs and cats.

I am very pleased with the Petmate Pet Hair Magnet that only cost $9.99 and maybe even now might be a lot cheaper since we bought it when it first came out. It picks up dog and cat hair very well as long as you don’t mind disposing the pile of it yourself. It gets to those hard to reach areas, like corner, that vacuums just don’t get no matter how hard they try. Petmate Pet Hair Magnet is made by an honorable company as well, Doskocil Manufacturing Company, which always makes me feel better about purchasing future products.

My fiancé loves to use this product and it keeps us from bickering back and forth about who’s hair is everywhere. So my dog SHEDS, no big deal. Hey if I am engaged to Starbucks through him, he can deal with my cute loveable, Casey, who is far less annoying that than coffee chain.

So get out there and start cleaning up all that hair!

Until next time,
K Parsons
