| modernmarvel's Full Review: Anna's Taqueria |
Annas has won cheap eats awards for many, many years and is well known for its fresh, cheap and filling food. Mexican food is hard to find in the Boston area, although in the last couple of years several burrito joints have opened. Annas is the original.
THE FOOD
You can eat well for under $5. Does that hook you? The menu at Annas includes tacos, burritos, super burritos, quesadillas, guacamole, chips and salsa and variations of those ingredients. You can get chips and fresh salsa for $1.50. The biggest steak burrito is under $5. You can also get fresh, grilled vegetables instead of meat. The grilled vegetables were very fresh and not greasy with a great grilled taste. The chicken also was tasty and not greasy. My husband gave the steak a big thumbs up.
Drinks include soft drinks, lemonade and unsweetened ice tea. No alcohol.
SERVICE
There is no service to speak of. You wait in line, order your food at the counter, move downstream, pay and collect your food. They pour the soda, you pour your own ice tea. They will accommodate special orders. Service is efficient. Servers are friendly only when it is efficient to be friendly.
AMBIANCE
It doesnt get more casual than this. This is a student mecca and there are jeans, pullovers and sweats galore.
The décor doesnt even meet fast food standards. The walls are yellow. There are chandeliers above and some wall sconces. There are a few tables. My thoughts on the décor range from blah to depressing. Its too bad they dont hang some posters or add some other interesting stuff. Consider take-out rather than dining in.
The food is served in takeout containers even when you are not taking out. You help yourself to plastic utensils and paper napkins.
The dining part of the restaurant was not a beacon of cleanliness. Tables were dirty from prior diners and the floor probably gets mopped only once a day so it accumulates crud. It wasnt so dirty that I couldnt eat there, but it was close. The serving area looked very clean and the kitchen, from what I could see on a quick peek, also looked clean.
KID FRIENDLINESS
This is such a casual place, anyone can be comfortable here including families. However, the menu is somewhat limited and a lot of the food is spicy. One of my kids couldnt really find anything she liked and ended up eating just chips.
GETTING THERE
Annas is located in Cleveland Circle in Brookline: a popular area filled with shops and restaurants. Because this area is so near to Boston College and Boston University, there are hundreds, nay, thousands, of students in the area.
The Ts green line stops right outside the door. There is also plenty of parking in the area all on meters. You might not park immediately outside the door, but you can find parking almost anytime within a 5-minute walk.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
Annas isnt really a dining out experience. Its more utilitarian than that. Annas is a place to get full for very little money. The next time I am in the area, and low on cash and short on time, I will seek the burrito.
