I do love me some Rosé in the summertime, and will try any I can get onto my taste buds. This particular rosé comes from Willamette Valley in Oregon and is made of Pinot Noir. The label is cream colored with burgundy lettering and décor, including a large ‘A' on the side, Anne Amie's signature on all of their wines. It has a screwcap and 13.1% alcohol by volume. The bottle runs about $15.
The full name is Anne Amie Midnight Saginee Cuvée 2010. The term Saginee is in reference to the winemaking process; this rose is actually collected from Pinot Noir barrels as liquid bleeds through in response to the fermenting. The ‘midnight' phrasing is because the timing is important with this and the ‘right moment often occurs late at night' (according to the label). They describe that it uses ‘neutral French oak' and it's ‘dry and deeply fruity' as well on that label, so let's see.....
The rosé pours a pale orange-y pink, and the nose is juicy and fresh-melon, hint of apricot. I take a few sips and YIKES. Watermelon, nectarine, cherry, a little spicy-FABULOUS! This wine is beautifully constructed nectar of fruity deliciousness with a slight, clean acidity in the finish, a fully flavored but lightweight body and is WAY to refreshing for refined casual sipping. Anne Amie Midnight Saginee Cuvée 2010 could spell danger for my well - being all summer...thank goodness it's a little more expensive than most other rosé that I like, it will (safely) remain an occasion treat in between my $10 bottles.
Rosé is fabulous to serve with BBQ and although this one may be a wee light to stand up to ribs and burgers, it's certainly great to sip while you're getting the grill going! I honestly enjoy it just as a way to close up a long hot day, on my back porch trying to cool off in the hopefully breeze of a summer night.
I definitely recommend Anne Amie Midnight Saginee Cuvée to new and seasoned rosé drinkers-it's so absolutely delicious and fresh and unique; it's easily the best rosé of Pinot Noir I have ever tried, and although my tastes tend to run more towards the fuller, bolder, strawberry and white pepper rosé this has definitely earned a place in my Top 5 for the summer of 2011!
