| CrazyTim's Full Review: Robert Asprin, Kelly Freas, Polly Freas - Another ... |
Skeeve was his name. And thieving was his game. Well, not necessarily a game, being young and without, you tend to do what it takes to survive. Hence, working for Garkin was a wonderful opportunity.
However, Garkin is a magician and works Skeeve awfully hard with the promise of teaching him the art. Of course, Skeeve is interested in learning the real stuff, not boring stuff like lighting a candle. Garkin rides him hard knowing that Skeeve is really just interested in learning in order to assist in his thievery.
However, one day, Garkin does something to impress Skeeve. He conjurs a demon!! A big, green, ugly and scary demon!! Unfortunately, Garkin has enemies too and they've sent assassins after him. It is at that time that they catch up to him and do him in. In the scuffle, the spell and messed up and Garkin kills the assassins on his way down.
As the smoke clears, Skeeve realizes Garkin and the assassins are dead. But he is not alone ... introducing Aahz! Ack, the demon is still there!
And so begins our story (don't worry, all this happens pretty quickly in the first part of the book and did a glossy summary).
To demonstrate the humor that Asprin weaves into his books, Aahz is from Perv. While most other people say that anyone from there is a "Pervert", Aahz prefers to say "Pervect". Also, the way that Aahz needs to partner up with Skeeve is humorous as well. Lastly, you will find the Bazaar simply bizzare!
I would recommend most of his books in this series. Some of the later ones get a little sparse of original content. Robert Asprin's writing style makes for easy to read and fairly smooth flow. Another series, Phule's trilogy (so far) is enjoyable as well.
BottomLine:
An enjoyable book. I haven't read Harry Potter, but from what my wife told me, I believe the subject line is accurate (considering Myth came out in the early '80s -- by the way, Epinions has it coming out in '86 which can't be right, that may be when the paperback version came out. Three of the books in the series after Another Fine Myth came out in '84, '85 & '86).
