Sometimes the heavens open and rain talent in a torrential downpour. People dance in the street as the talent touches them, and they smile as the rainbow brightens their lives.
And sometimes that talent - like a fleeting firefly - lands on a spot and illuminates the landscape for the briefest of moments. Everyone stops, because they know it can't stay at the spot long, but they want it to last so they can capture the beauty of the moment in their mind.
Just such a moment occurred in downtown New York City at the West Bank Cafe early last year. 75 lucky people sat caberet style as Ron Bohmer took the stage. They knew him from his most recent acting masterpiece - as The Scarlet Pimpernel onstage at the Neil Simon Theater. They knew he had a vocal range that can elicit gasps of delight from a Broadway audience, or draw tears of compassion from a handful of listeners.
What most did not know was that Ron Bohmer is that most unique of talents - a quintessential Renaissance Man. Actor, Songwriter, Singer and Charismatic Charmer - all in one handsome package. Able to sing other's music to perfection, and equally able to pen his own music that will have you wondering why his talent is so sparsely known outside musical theatre.
As the band warmed up, those of us present at the live recording of Another Life were just glad to see one of the all-time good guys get another chance to shine. But what we did not expect was for his brilliance to overpower us to the extent it did.
It took only a hour for those present to realize that this man is a consummate artist. A vocal artist. A lyrical artist. A musical artist. And an artist who can take you with him as he tells his story through song:
"Love should be the greatest thing in life... worth the risk we take. Truth is in the way you live your life...and trusting love is never a mistake. What you find will come from what you make"
That is from the last track - A Lifetime of Hello. Upbeat, and uplifting, with a tempo that will lift you from your seat - and lyrics that will give you a magical window into this talented man.
If you are in love, or have ever been, then you'll surely find truth in this lyric from that same song:
"Out of the heart of the darkness comes a rainbow cross the skies. And I can face everyday if I can face it in your eyes. Cause that's the thing about a rainbow - you cannot see the end... unless you find it everyday there in the heart of your best friend"
If there is any true justice in this world of ours, then A Lifetime of Hello ought to be playing on millions of stereos by the end of this year. Because Ron Bohmer sings with the passion of love, and his music and words ring with the magic of truth.
What more could most people want from a recording? A chance to hear the match of music and words in a powerful combination. A combination that appeals to the mind as well as the ears.
Not convinced yet? Well, through the magic of the internet, you can jump over to www.ronbohmer.com and hear a couple of sample clips that might convince you that there is a new album that you need to have in your collection.
One of those albums that you can play alone with a smile on your face.
Repeatedly.
And that same album can also make you the star when you take it to your next dinner party. Bring a copy as a gift for the host, and ask them to put it on during the evening. Watch with delight as people stop what they are doing, and listen. Smile when they stop the host and asked "who is this guy, and where in the world did you get this album?"
Twelve terrific tracks in all. From the magical Sandra Is to the musical masterpiece When The Lights Go Out. A thrilling rollercoaster ride of speed, melody, and slowdown that will have you hitting the "replay" button many times.
Oh - and one more thing. If you happen to love a Broadway musical, and the "show stopper" that all great shows possess, then this is truly an album for you as well.
Because the one track on this album that was not written by Mr. Bohmer is his gift to his multitude of Broadway fans. They pestered him at the stage door night after night, pleading for him to record She Was There.
And he has. On this album. Music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Nan Knighton. And a performance by Ron Bohmer to send chills down your spine.
THE definitive She Was There. Broadway captured to perfection by one man and one piano - working together as if sharing one moment of pure elation as the world stops to listen.
Are you still reading this, when you could have easily jumped over to Bohmer's site and listened to the man...?
I'll end now, so you can begin your appreciation unaided by mere words.
Isn't talent something?
It compels those of us who have missed the gift of musical perfection to stand and cheer as it touches our lives...
