heatherweller's Full Review: Answer One-Step Pregnancy Test
Answer claims to be significantly cheaper than its competitors, and I suppose the only way to do that is cut corners on some "extras." In general, I'm a frugal person and willing to deal with a few rounded corners in favor of saving a couple of dollars; however, I don't think I'll purchase the Answer test again.
Does it work? Yep. Is it easy? Yep. Is it the cheapest available? Well, that depends. The store brand test where I shopped is always less expensive, and the name brands are sometimes on sale cheaper.
So, if you're looking for no-frills, the store brand is questionable or unavailable, and you just want to save money, Answer is a fine test. It's a midstream test, in which you hold the test wand in your urine stream for 5 seconds, then wait for the results. The results are easy to read: two lines means you're pregnant, one line means you're not (and no lines means the test didn't work right).
[As an aside in the "questionable ethics" category - the directions include a section about it meaning the test was invalid if no line shows up. Unlike every other brand whose instructions I've read, they don't give you a number to call or place to write for a refund - they just say "buy another Answer test and try again." First, if the old one didn't work, I'd be demanding a refund, and secondly, I would NOT want to go buy another of the same brand!]
Anyhow... questionable ethics aside, on to the "no-frills" part. Now, I'm not talking frills like the test that converts to a life-long keepsake certificate (hello, I just did WHAT on that thing you want me to keep???), or playing Brahams Lullabye if it's positive. I mean things like an easy to hold test wand, a cover for the tip, etc.
The test wand is two-sided. One side contains a fairly small opening where you direct the urine, the other side contains a smaller opening where you read the results. Most mid-stream tests I've used simply have a bit at the end of the wand that extends out onto which you urinate, unlike this 1" long hole only on one side. So, already you have to have good aim. Add that to it being a very short stick, and you have to have long arms!
You can, of course, collect your urine into a cup and dip the wand into that, eliminating the short arms/big belly/can't shoot straight problems. However, you still have to take the wand, turn it over so the side that's soaked in urine is facing downwards, and let it sit for 2 minutes before reading the result. At this point in other tests, you usually have a little cap for the wet end of the wand so you don't end up contaminating whatever you lay it down upon. Apparently that would push the Answer budget up a bit too much, so be ready w/ some toilet paper to put underneath it and the anti-bacterial soap for when you're done.
Maybe I'm a snob, but I just don't like to start my day having to clean my own urine off the bathroom sink. Or anyone else's for that matter.
For me, the extra(?) money for other tests is worth it, even if they're NOT on sale, for the extra conveniences they offer.
