| DJC750's Full Review: Apple Studio Display 17 inch CRT Monitor |
When I originally purchased this monitor, I was expecting something big. That is exactly what I got when I opened the box. Now while not as large as the 21" monitor that apple is now selling, this 17" monitor is really quite large.
This size is very useful when you need more screen space, as when you want to look at two pages of a document at once, or if you are a gamer, to see the head of that enemy hiding behind a bush. Now while these are just examples of the numerous things you can do with a larger screen, if you need even more space, look into installing another graphics card into your computer, and adding another monitor.
Going back to the Apple Studio Display 17", there are also some disadvantages to this large size. The only real noticeable one, is the huge amount of space that this monitor takes up. Now while it is on stilts, so that you can place objects underneath it, it still requires a huge amount of desk space. If this is a problem, but you still want a big screen, or you are willing to pay more money, you might want to look into a LCD or flat-panel monitor.
The stand which I mentioned before does add other advantages, however. The screen is totally adjustable, allowing you to adjust both the tilt and turn of the screen. This can be extremely useful, and is easily carried out. The stand is also the perfect size to fit your G3 or G4 keyboard underneath.
As for adjusting the tint, contrast and other such variables, there are special little buttons. These little buttons, two for each adjustable thing, one for higher, and one for lower, are very easy to use. As soon as you touch one, a little box appears on the bottom of the screen and shows you how close you are to the maximum or minimum of that you are able to adjust it. There is also a menu, which you can access via these buttons, from which you can adjust almost anything about the picture and screen. Now while it takes a second to figure out how to move through this menu, it is very user friendly, and is very easy to figure out.
The picture quality of this monitor is extremely good. Something that you would expect from a company that's designing machines for gamers and artists. It easily beats any PC screen with a Macintosh adapter. The picture is so crisp, that it is very hard to match on any screen, let alone for one that costs only $500.
As for the price, I bought it as a package with my G4, and was able to grab it with a $200 discount. If you are able to, I would suggest that you buy your computer with this monitor, as there are numerous deals out there, which can save you a lot of money. However, even at $500, this is still an excellent deal.
The style of this monitor, not to be left out, is generally sleek, and perfectly fits with either a G3, in it's bondi blue color, or with a G4, in it's graphite color. The tower and this computer go together very nicely, and add a certain slickness to your desktop.
Overall, this computer really only has one downside, it's size. If that's not a problem, then buy it, as it combines quality, screen size, crispness, sleekness and a very good price.
